David @thebondexperience , all the best to you and Danielle on your move to Switzerland. The loss to the American Bond community is huge, and we’re counting on you to return frequently so we’ll feel as if you never left. Thanks for all the memories over the last eight years, and I’m looking forward to the next one, when I can say, ‘Welcome back.’ Until then, I look forward to seeing the new kinds of content you’ll be creating in your new environment.

No Time to Die premiered five years ago today, and I wrote a review of the film’s wardrobe immediately after the premiere. Five years later, I’ve reviewed the wardrobe again in more detail to see how my perception of the clothes has changed after sitting with them for five years. I also wanted to include the film in my wardrobe review series.

No Time to Die is Daniel Craig’s fifth and final James Bond film, bringing closure to his tenure as Bond. Bond’s wardrobe likewise summarises Craig’s style across the previous four films while also adding some completely new looks. No Time to Die brought on board a new costume designer with the American Suttirat Anne Larlarb, but as usual, Bond’s costume also saw input from Daniel Craig with some outfits reflecting Craig’s own taste.

The wardrobe excels when it recalls previous Bond styles, like the shawl-collar dinner suit, the checked suits, the cocktail-cuff shirts, the black camp shirt, the Crockett & Jones shoes, and the grey and white T-shirts.

Bond’s casual style breaks too much from his established style, especially with the reliance on needlecord clothes and henleys. Massimo Alba has a tremendous impact on Bond’s look in No Time to Die, and while the brand makes some sense when Bond is in Italy, the clothes are completely out of place in Norway. Bond breaks completely from his usual look with the garage outfit, and looking stylish and fashionable in that scene doesn’t excuse the fact that the character does not dress like any previous version of James Bond. When unveiling the classic Bond car, he should be wearing a classic Bond outfit. After wearing many British brands in the previous two films, Bond unfortunately breaks from that in No Time to Die with a reliance on Italian and American brands.

Bond starts his visit to Japan wearing a black and light grey herringbone suit made by Connery’s usual tailor, @anthony.sinclair.london . You Only Live Twice was filmed on location in Japan in the summer of 1966, and the cloth is unfit for Japan’s hot, humid summers, being too heavy and not a breathable weave.

The jacket has soft shoulders with slightly roped sleeve heads. It has two buttons on the front in a low stance. The narrow lapels—about 6.5 cm wide—high, straight gorge at a slightly steep angle and elegantly roll down to the jacket’s top button. The jacket is cut slightly open at the lower front. It is detailed with a welt breast pocket, flapped hip pockets (sometimes with the flaps tucked in), a single rear vent and four buttons on each cuff. The suit trousers have double forward pleats, a trim leg and Daks side adjusters.

The cream cotton poplin shirt is from @turnbull_asser . It has a spread collar, a narrow front placket, rear shoulder pleats and darts, and rounded two-button cocktail cuffs. Bond leaves the second button open on his cocktail cuffs so they roll more, and this may contribute to the cuffs getting stuck outside his jacket sleeves when applauding at the sumo wrestling match.

The shoes tell a more significant story than the rest of the outfit. Bond is familiar with Japanese customs for removing shoes, and he takes off his back slip-ons at the sumo match to sit cross-legged on the floor. He later removes them before entering Dikko Henderson’s home. Thanks to the elastic in the shoes, Bond is able to slip his feet in and out of his shoes without handling them, making them the perfect choice for his time in Japan. He later dons a black-and-white shoe that he steals from a henchman he kills, along with the rest of his outfit for a disguise.

Finding Forrester may be best known for one particular line that Sean Connery says, but it’s far more than that. Like in The Offence, it’s the kind of dramatic role he desired to play after leaving James Bond, but it’s not something he did often. What’s not unusual for Connery is that William Forrester is a stylish role, but in a much different sense from his James Bond style. His tailored style, which comes at the end of the film, is more mature and lived-in than Bond’s style, while it still takes cues from contemporary fashion.

The film is set around the time the film was released, in 2000. For 2000, the suit is both current and old-fashioned, and that was most likely what costume designer Ann Roth had in mind. The suit is made of light brown herringbone tweed, an appropriate choice for a character who is Scottish and a writer. Tweed is often used to make a character look old-fashioned and academic. A tweed three-piece suit especially so.

The dark shirt with a suit is a look that’s very much of the late 1990s. It’s a shirt that says, ‘You’re the man now, dog,’ with an emphasis on the now. Juxtaposed with the tweed suit, the black shirt shows that Forrester is just as relevant in the present as he was in the past. The shirt’s style is typical of the era in America, with a small point collar, a large chest pocket and one-button cuffs.

For a night out at the casino and dinner with his contact Kristatos in For Your Eyes Only, James Bond wears a black notched-lapel dinner suit. Sean Connery wore notched-lapel dinner suits twice previously in Goldfinger and Diamonds Are Forever, and this one follows in the same tradition with many similarities. Some menswear experts believe that notched lapels are inappropriate for a dinner jacket because they bring it too close to an ordinary lounge suit, but the style has historical precedent going back to the Edwardian era, and it has been a popular alternative to the more widely accepted shawl collar and peaked lapel since the 1960s. In Bond’s case, when his clothes are made bespoke, the notched-lapel dinner jacket is always a purposeful choice, unlike the shortcut it often is in ready-to-wear.

‘There is a reception at six. So, I shall be needing a white jacket and a black tie. And if possible, a clean shirt.’

Seven of us got the memo to wear a white dinner jacket to @thecultureofbond ‘s train dinner, with a mix of Bondian peaked lapels and classic shawl collars. A fancy dinner during the summer is on the few occasions when the white dinner jacket is traditionally acceptable. The white jacket (with or without the red carnation) was a theme, but not a necessity, with some men dressed stylishly in black dinner suits, lounge suits and blazers.

I wore my ivory peaked-lapel dinner jacket and midnight blue dress trousers from @anthony.sinclair.london to Live and Let Ride, hosted by @thecultureofbond . Both are made of mohair blends from @hollandandsherryapparel . The dinner jacket is inspired by both what James Bond wears in Goldfinger and Octopussy. The cotton voile dress shirt is from @frank_foster_shirts and has a spread collar, a pleated front with buttons, and double cuffs. The bow tie is from @lenoeudpapillon in a diamond-point shape inspired by Dr. No but much wider. The black oxford shoes are from @brooksbrothers , made by @alfredsargent .

Dressing for the Glamour of Train Travel, 007 Style

Trains feature heavily in the James Bond films, not only as a means of transport but frequently as a backdrop for fine dining where Bond can sit down for a conversation while still in motion, or for a dramatic fight sequence in close quarters where nobody can escape. When Bond chooses to travel by train—opposed to when he suddenly finds himself aboard or on top of a train—he usually travels in luxury. For a first-class train experience, he must dress the part.

Bond’s on-screen relationship with glamourous train travel begins on the legendary Orient Express in From Russia with Love, as part of his escape route after stealing the Lektor decoding device. He wears a dark grey pick-and-pick suit from Anthony Sinclair with a pale blue shirt and a navy grenadine tie, an outfit that would still be equally appropriate today for first-class travel. Bond has a private sleeping compartment, but to Tatiana’s dismay, they take their meal in the restaurant car. The restaurant car is a high-class, wood-panelled dining room that demands being elegantly dressed. In such a restaurant today, a man should at least wear a jacket. Bond wears a suit and tie, his daily business uniform, so his attire is not particularly special, but it’s more than suitable for dinner.

Bond rides the most elegant train of the series in Spectre in Morocco, wearing a tan suede jacket with a light blue casual shirt as well as a light brown linen-blend jacket with a white shirt and brown tie, but for dinner he changes into something more special for dinner. This small train, like a luxury boutique hotel, has a valet to press Bond’s dinner clothes before their grand reveal. From casual to black tie, Bond’s attire takes his train trip in Spectre from accessible to aspirational, everything modern Bond train travel should be.

@anthony.sinclair.london has recreated James Bond’s first kill suit and shirt with the help of the original maker @academycostumes . Both items are made of linen for a relaxed look that suits the unpolished rookie Bond, but still remains stylish for a more mature man. The suit is unstructured, a popular style now that was ahead of its time 20 years ago. This outfit is ideal for the warmer half of the year, and the pieces make up the perfect warm-weather capsule wardrobe, versatile enough to dress up or down.

The shirt is a faithful reproduction from the original makers Academy Costumes, using the original pattern and cutting notes.

The suit and shirt are both available now from Anthony Sinclair.
