Our AFM Cookie Day fundraiser is back!

Our annual Cookie Day is fast approaching, when the AFM & Friends gather together for a glorified cookie exchange. As always, we expect lots of extra cookies, so we're offering up a selection of this year's Cookie Day cookies (not the ones pictured--this was back in 2023!).

The last of the new cookies in this year's line-up. I usually include a speculaas in my collection each year, using a recipe that I developed after much testing and tweaking. But decided to switch things up this year after seeing this recipe for Hazelnut Spice Speculaas. Loved the idea of the addition of delicious hazelnuts and their nuttiness comes through so nicely in the cookie. They are finished with a brushing of amaretto glaze to give them the perfect little sheen.

Is it even Christmas if there isn't a spiced, molassey cookie in the mix?! Was originally going to return to an old favourite recipe of mine, Chocolate Gingerbread, but that got shoved aside for these Five-Spice Crackle Cookies instead. I always love the look of a crackle cookie--maximum visual impact for very little effort.

Very five-spice forward, although the texture was a little on the denser side than what I would like in a cookie. But a good holiday cookie option!

When I saw the recipe for these Baklava Sugar Cookies, I thought they were so much fun. I loved the concept of the pistachio honey filling stuffed inside a sugar cookie. Were they a pain in the a** to make? You betcha! But were they worth it? Totally!

As I was initially reading the recipe, I balked at the amount of sugar it was asking for. I did cut a significant portion of sugar from the cookie dough, and also cut some from the filling, which I'm glad I did. These cookies are still sweet, but for my taste buds, they are at a level that I can handle.

Super fun! Super flavourful, with the spices and that hint of orange blossom water in the background! Need to figure out a better way for the rose petals to stay on though...

Of the four new cookies in my holiday cookie line-up this year, these Black Sesame Ricciarelli are my favourite. I love ricciarelli cookies--a cross between a macaron and an amaretti. Almondy in flavour with an irresistible soft, chewy texture. I was instantly intrigued by this recipe when I saw it, especially with the addition of black sesame. These cookies did not disappoint! The earthy nuttiness of the black sesame comes through, even with all the almondy goodness, and it has the perfect chew. Definitely adding these to my regular cookie rotation year-round!

A classic almond-pear tart. Pears were still a little underripe so I ended up poaching them first. And who doesn't love almond frangipane? Made this as a gift for someone, so hope it was okay!

This is never a pretty looking dish, but it's one of my absolute favourites. Braised pork trotters with fermented red beancurd. The AFM girls and I (plus friends) shared a mangalista pig from @lintonpasturepork a couple weeks back and I asked for the trotters so I could make this specific dish. It's one that my mom has always made for me, and is also a staple in my family during Lunar New Year. I had my parents email over her recipe to me, threw everything in my Instant Pot, and voilà, beautifully fall-off-the-bone pork trotters. Also added in lotus root, cuz I love them in this dish.

Had so many blueberries and wanted to make some muffins out of some of them. I have a go-to recipe that I love but that also requires a ripe banana, and alas, I had no bananas in the house. The Jordan Marsh blueberry muffin recipe has a 5-star rating with over 17K reviews on @nytcooking, so decided to give it a try. Made a few tweaks for my own personal preferences, but pretty solid recipe. 🫐
