ohio hasn’t been an all out snow globe. i’m not an instant icicle when stepping outside, but winter is coming. also, thankful to be able to eat gluten bc croissants are god sent. 

found this rooney novel at half price books and will need to read all of her books now. normal people is forever part of my chemistry. also, finally got the barnes special edition of circe. carrying her around the house like a baby and staring at her orange edges. 🧡

has anyone finished a book this year? did the first week of Jan take 873 years to pass?

📗 Life is Strange 🎮 

I’ve been enjoying the crap out of playing the original Life is Strange video games. Their content is dark, moody, and a little cheesy, but they’re like watching a movie. Angsty journal entries, throwback music, and queer pining…it’s become an obsession. Which is why I now own the first two volumes of the graphic novels. 🥰 Very pumped for these. 

The Second Death of Locke is deliciously slow, and I look forward to picking it up each time. A big sigh of relief for my recent aversion to *thicc bois* Somehow, reading on a Kindle is working for my brain. 

I also started an acotar reread. Funny to think this series is the reason I started a bookstagram. It’s been four years, and I’ve forgotten so many details, but I’m loving the huge waive of nostalgia.

“And again one asks oneself what has one done with one’s years. Where have you buried your best days? Have you lived or not?”

I read this and thought of a lonely man in love with his own delusions.

“I am a dreamer. I know so little of real life.”

The dreamer, our narrator, has no friends, no family, only a housekeeper to keep him company. He walks the town’s streets by day and dreams alone at home at night.

His encounter with Nastenka is much like how a dream arrives: suddenly, unexpectedly, by chance. He’s so taken by her presence, by the possibilities she seems to represent, that he becomes blind to the fact that her heart belongs to someone else.

The dreamer is in love with the idea of Nastenka rather than Nastenka herself. Maybe instead of escaping into himself every night, he can escape into her. He barely knows her, they only see each other for four nights, but she represents what his life could be. So perhaps it makes sense that he’s so receptive to her emotional unavailability. He’s after a fantasy, not reality.

Even at the end, when his vision of a new life with Nastenka has been shattered, he says, “My God, a whole moment of happiness! Is that too little for the whole of a man’s life?” And in that, he preserves his dream. He can turn those four nights into something beautiful. 

I thought this was beautifully layered as an illusion buried inside a love story. The man can WRITE!

“My hair is getting pulled by the stars again.”

The end of Summer brings restlessness. We’re reaching out for blankets and bonfires while still dipping our toes in the pool. I’m eager to smell the crisp mornings, and drink pumpkin everything, and feel that special snow globe feeling Fall brings about; a serene stillness. Finally slowing down and taking stock. It’s good to be an introvert this time of year. 🍂

Reading has been slow going. I finished Really Good, Actually by Monica Heisey. It gave me some laughs and a lot of second hand embarrassment. I also finished a couple adult picture books: Monstress V3 and Frieren V1. I’m going to need more shelf space for this growing obsession. Also, finally started White Nights by Dostoevsky. 🥰

I loved reading Famesick. I loved all the references and name drops and Google wormholes I found myself in, just trying to absorb as much information as possible. Re-watching Girls at the same time was the perfect companion; everything became more juicy, layered, and perspective-altering. Memoirs by nature are bias, but Dunham’s honesty feels complete. She’s not afraid to embarrass herself by refusing to edit reality. 

There’s a qoute that reads: “I hadn’t yet learned that if you don’t share what’s happening as it’s happening, it can still be happening.” I’ve read it a dozen times already. This turtling, this hoarding of hardship, leaves your emotions to sit and fester, causing the whole ordeal to drag on longer and more tumultuously than if you were to have just reached out to your support people. Anyway, truth bomb. 😅 

Are you a Lena Dunham fan or hater? She seems to polarize the people, but to me, she’ll always be the voice of my generation. Or, at least, the voice of a generation. 😉 by @book.tabs

And now she’s dead and I have that feeling all the time, no matter where I stand”

Writers and Lovers is a snapshot into the life of Casey, a 31-year-old struggling writer reeling from the sudden death of her mother. She’s balancing heartache, creativity, two men, and a whole lot of plates at her waitressing job.

The story is intimate and introspective, throwing you into Casey’s headspace, where you never really leave. I found her easy to relate to and vulnerable. She’s struggling, she’s finding herself, and she’s somehow managing to keep her heart open through the ups and downs of grief.

The writing is gorgeous, but I expected as much after reading Heart the Lover and falling in love with King’s prose. I didn’t find this one quite as compelling, but I still adored it and would recommend it to my fellow lovers of sad girl lit. by @book.tabs

Kristin Hannah’s books have thus far consumed me entirely. I’ve read Firefly Lane, The Four Winds, The Nightingale, and now the Great Alone. She seems to steer towards writing complex female leads, scenic imagery with immersive storytelling, and ripping my heart out. 

The Great Alone centers around Leni Allbright and her family. It’s 1974 and her father, a former Vietnam POW, has uprooted their lives once again, except this time to the remote wilderness of Alaska. No electricity, outhouse remote. As her father’s mental health declines as quickly as Alaska’s winter arrives, Leni is subject to not only the dangers of outside but the terrifying reality of the threat inside her own home.

This story spanned almost all of Leni’s lifetime yet I wasn’t bored once. I cried, I raged, I put myself in so many other’s shoes. I felt like I was in the story with the characters. A heavy hitter to be sure, but one I’d recommend for the ultimate sad girl summer.

June recap: lemon poppyseed macaroons, a new bookstore (and new books, obviously), slushies in the sun, Celtic fest, Birria tacos, an art festival, a vet appointment, Cheese (🐶), and all the people that made any of these summer memories worthwhile. Oh, and not a single book finished. 😇

My anxiety has been raging. I’m barely holding onto escapism as a coping mechanism, but I’m so thankful for the friendships that keep pulling me back to myself. What’s everyone’s 411? Are we all collectively bursting at the seams? 

Tonight I will finish Writers and Lovers, eat holiday leftovers prepared by my best friend, and watch our lord and savior (Emma D’Arcy) go through the 7 stages of grief on tv. This is a good Sunday. ☀️ by @book.tabs
