📚 JUNE WRAP-UP 📚

June was a great month of audiobooks. I branched out and tried a romance book, August Lane, and it was a good one if it kept my attention. I finished the 21st book in Cleo Coyle’s Coffeehouse Mysteries series, and I can’t wait for the next one in September. Working Stiff was one of the books for the @endoflifear book club, and I highly recommend it. The author's stories as a medical examiner were transparent and sensitive all the same. Blood in the Water is a middle-grade book, and I literally finished it in one afternoon. I did not see that ending coming! Lastly, the most impactful book of the month was Autoimmunity and the Good Girls: How Permission to Put Ourselves First Has the Power to Keep Us Well by @sarahirshbordo This book came out June 2nd and I finished it in just a couple days. I’m planning a separate post, but I can not recommend this book enough, and I have so many clips that I will surely be purchasing a physical copy.

It's been forever since I found a cozy nature spot to read alongside the sounds of nature. When I lived in Georgia, I would visit Vickery Creek in Roswell. I'd sit alongside the Chattahoochee and lose track of time. Now I need to find my reading rock in Little Rock.📚

🌳 Tell us what you love about the outdoors and reading.

This book walk was extra special. It's the first of hopefully many more consistent walks. I've had a lot of health challenges over the past year, but I'm finally feeling ready to trust my body and get moving again.👟

My #currentlisten is 26 Beauties, the 26th book in the Women's Murder Club series by James Patterson. I had it on pre-order, and it is not disappointing.🎧

Had a lovely day visiting some of my favorite book spots for @rockcitiesbookcrawl I'm really thankful for the book community in Little Rock. Thanks to everyone who made today a special experience.

I can't wait to sit with both books in the coming months. So much to learn.🩷🙏🏾

Running this one back for 2026 @rockcitiesbookcrawl

I've come to look forward to this day for the last few years, first in Georgia and now in Arkansas. Tomorrow, I'm doing a "tip-toe" instead of a crawl and checking out:

It’s #InternationalWomensDay Here are a few physical books written by and about women that I’ve read over the last few years.

Invisible Women: Date Bias in a World Designed for Men by Caroline Criado Perez - this book provides an international perspective on how women have been left out of so many critical decisions over time (and still are!)

Wide Awake and Dreaming by Julie Flygare - this memoir about living with narcolepsy is beautifully written, and I’m honored to know Julie and thankful for her support over the years.

Vox by Christina Dalcher - I’ll just leave you with the 1st line of the synopsis👀
“On the day the government decrees that women are no longer allowed more than one hundred words per day, Dr. Jean McClellan is in denial. This can't happen here. Not in America. Not to her.”

I’m Still Here: Black Dignity in a World Made for Whiteness by Austin Channing Brown - this was a powerfully reflective and transparent memoir that bubbled up a lot of emotions and I will always highly recommend!

The Memo: What Women of Color Need to Know to Secure a Seat at the Table - this audiobook opened my eyes and gave the validation I didn’t know I desperately needed. The title says it all, and this book is a must for women of color.

Inclusive Transportation by Veronica O. Davis - mobility is a right, and how our cities can make the best choices should be a no-brainer. I'm thankful to know her, and I recommend this book at least once a month!

Reclaiming Your Community: You Don’t Have to Move Out of Your Neighborhood to Live in a Better One by Majora Carter - She discusses how low-status communities can focus on talent retention to create a strong local economy.

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot - this is the story of Henrietta Lacks, whose cells were taken without her knowledge and the story of her and her family in the aftermath.

The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan - an oldie, but goodie. It unpacks the complex stories of Chinese mothers and daughters. Have tissues handy! by @booked4joy

📚FEBRUARY RECAP📚

I had great plans to finish so may books last month, especially for #blackhistorymonth But I was feeling a lot of feels and to be honest, many of the books I had planned to read about our history were feeling all to current. 😔 I will say I highly recommend Packing Light by Shilletha Curtis. A remarkable memoir and, at times, heavy read about conquering a big goal, mental health, and childhood trauma. Her story is worth sharing. I will note check trigger warnings.

❓️ How was your February?

In 2025, I felt like I wanted to learn more about effective communication. I've been public speaking since I was a kid and have no issues chatting it up anywhere, anytime. But communicating is different- it's intentional, requires listening, and a back/forth. I did what I usually do and dove into a few books on the subject AND committed to putting what I learned into action. With that said, here are the five books that I would HIGHLY recommend for anyone wanting to improve their communication skills, interactions with others, and even remote work/online communication skills. Three of these books I did as part of a book club, so we were able to really get into the content over four weeks.

✅ Let me know if you have any books to add to this list. by @booked4joy

Book 1 for February was Packing Light by Shilletha Curtis. This is a thoughtful reminder that sometimes the heaviest things we carry aren’t physical at all. Shilletha writes with honesty and clarity about letting go of what no longer serves us and choosing a life rooted in intention, healing, and self‑trust. This is a reminder to release the weight and make room for what actually matters. Her journey through the Appalachian Trail is nothing less than inspiring. 🙌🏾
I do recommend looking up the trigger warnings for this book.

✅️JANUARY WRAP-UP✅️

Stats: 9 books read, 301 pages, 58.95 hours listened, 1- 5⭐️

It was a great start to the new year as far as books go. I’m working my way through the Coffeehouse Mystery series from Cleo Coyle and enjoying every single title. My 5 star for the month was Game of Nines by James Patterson (audiobook). Talk about a plot twist - WOW!

The top book I’d recommend is Black Fatigue: How Racism Erodes the Mind, Body, and Spirit by Mary-Frances Winters. The author put so much into words that I could relate to and encouraged people to read this book if they are true allies.

❓How did your reading month go?
