HAUNTED SPURS - VALENTINE IANIA - REVIEW πŸ€ πŸ‘»

This was such a great and original mix of genres and tropes. Since I already love cowboy romances and thrillers, I predicted this book was going to be right up my alley.

The characters were very well written, they all had a different personality. We read from a dual pov. The FMC, Selene Dusk, is a gothic erotica author who just got out of a relationship. She is in the middle of a writer's block and seeks inspiration. Competing on Haunted Spurs just might be the answer to get the inspiration she needs.

The MMC, Ron Willers, just purchased a ranch, a haunted one to be exact, which is also the filming set for the reality show called Haunted Spurs.

I loved the chemistry between Selene and Ron. They were so different but they ended up fitting so well together. It's so incredibly cute and I love the way they got to know each other more. He was so protective of Selene. The tension between them was definitely there. And not only them because we also read about the other contestants here and there. They were also really fun to read about. Very "trashy reality TV" vibes but in a fun way.

The writing style was easy to read and the chapters weren't long, which made it an enjoyable experience. I also loved the humor in it, which made it pretty lighthearted. But what really made me sit on the edge of my seat were the "spooky" scenes.

If you can't decide between a cowboy romance or a spooky read this fall, this might be the answer.

My rating: 4.5 ⭐️

Reading update
I finally read The Score and I loved reading about Allie and Dean. Especially while watching the Off Campus tv show. Which I also absolutely love!

This month I finished 2 books. I listened to Piranesi on audio and the narrator did a great job. There was a lot of world building and information going on. I kind of wonder if I should've read it physically so I could reread a few sentences and be able to really absorb the scenes fully. I was able to visualize most of the things, but I also felt like wanting to look up some book aesthetics. It was a very interesting and enjoyable read. And I think the people are right when they say you should go into it blind.

I also managed to finish Throttled by Lauren Asher. It was such a great book and I loved the dynamic between Maya and Noah. There was so much tension I wanted to keep reading, especially the second half.

Q: What books did you love reading this summer?

πŸ–€ Small Town

πŸ–€ One-Night Stand

πŸ–€ Forced Proximity

πŸ–€ Haunted Reality Show

πŸ–€ Erotic Romance Author x Cowboy

Blurb
Selene Dusk is the queen of gothic erotica. Her pages are filled with darkness, obsession, and brutal passionβ€”but her own life has completely fallen apart. Cynical, antisocial, and suffering from the worst writer’s block of her career, she seeks inspiration in the last place she ever expected to find it: the arms of a cowboy.

One unforgettable night later, Selene disappears, convinced she’ll never see him again.

Until she returns to her eccentric, gossip-obsessed hometown of Elm Hollow, where her ruthless literary agent gives her an ultimatum: break through her writer’s block or lose everything. Her solution? Compete on Haunted Spurs, a chaotic new reality show filmed on a historic, haunted ranch.

There’s only one problem: contestants must compete in pairs. And her partner has to be a cowboy.

Enter Ron Willersβ€”the town’s new cowboy, owner of the haunted ranch, and the annoyingly charming man with broad shoulders, an illegal dimple, and a smile bright enough to destroy her carefully crafted darkness. He agrees to join the show on one condition: Selene is his partner.

Forced to share a roofβ€”and the only king-sized bedβ€”with the man who threatens every wall she’s built around herself, Selene finds her inspiration returning faster than she can resist him. But between haunted challenges, reality TV chaos, and a cowboy determined to prove that kindness can be just as addictive as obsession, the Queen of Darkness may be facing the one story she never saw coming:

A love story.

Do you have a free library in your neighbourhood? Do you visit them?

I don't check them out often but maybe I should. The times I've checked one out it there weren't any books that I was interested in. I did see a few Tess Gerritsen books this time. I haven't read any of her books yet, so maybe I should check them out. And then go back later and see if they're still there. Have you read any of her books?

Hii lovelies 🩷
I've been so busy this week I actually didn't have time to make a proper birthday post so here's kind of a recap of my weekend.

To kind of celebrate my 30th birthday (july 15th), I went shopping this weekend and have some dinner with my parents in Rotterdam on Saturday and on Sunday I met up with bestie @dearmoodreader in Utrecht. We had such good food. It's been a very nice but busy weekend.πŸ₯°

My legs are tired from walking this much, but I'll be fine. Unfortunately I don't have any pictures from Saturday. πŸ˜…

How's your weekend been?

**Spot any good books from these bookshelves? πŸ‘€πŸ€**

JUNE WRAP UP
I read 3 books this month. I enjoyed 2 of them but 1 just put me off a little bit. Also wanted to give a little review to share my thoughts about them.

🎧 Medusa
This was a great retelling of the myth of Medusa. You get to know her entire life. She was left on the street as a baby until a woman picked her up and raised her. The woman had two daughters of her own. Both had magical powers, but Medusa did not. She has always felt left out because she's different. At one point she had snakes for hair that talked her into killing people who called her a witch and wanted to attack her.

It's a story about feminism and just the story you know, but from her perspective. I was surprised by how much I liked it because I picked it up on a whim. I felt sorry for what happened to her and how people treated her. Also how she kind of started to have a nice connection with Perseus as he watched her to eventually hand her to Poseidon.
It does contain some triggering subjects so be aware.

πŸ“š I Who Have Never Known Men
This was such a good, thought-provoking book! Though the book is short, I really took my time with it. The FMC has lived in this bunker with 39 other women for as long as she can remember. She's literally never seen the light of day, let alone how the outside world works. We also never get to know her name. She's never been to school so all the knowledge she obtains is from the other women. She has so many questions about how things work. The ending also left me with more questions than answers which is also a beautiful thing.

🎧 Hex
We're following a woman who is accused of being a witch and the men have locked her up to execute her later. We learn that she's not a witch, just a powerful woman with knowledge. And I think there's not much more to the story than that. Also I listened to the audiobook and really had to get used to the Scottish accent.
And the phrase "or so they said" was used so many times, it kind of annoyed me. I don't know if I just had the wrong expectations, as this is just a little over 100 pages (2 hours, 45 min.). But I'd rather have more story, more vibes and more pages than this.

It took me almost 2 months to finish this book, but I finally did it! But I wanted to keep it short and sweet so here are some of my thoughts on "On Wings of Blood" by Briar Boleyn.

Since I love the Empyrean series and since this book is also set on an academy, was said to also contain a dragon rider, I expected to love this one as well. It also has an enemies-to-lovers romance but this time with a vampire. I can't remember the last time I read a book with vampires, so I thought it would be fun to pick this up.

I liked how the author explained to world building and the magic system. It didn't feel like info dump to me, so it was a pretty good introduction into the series. I also liked the friendships Medra made with Florence, Naveen and Kage. The romance really is a slowburn. It has a great chapter length and it kept me wanting to read just one more chapter.

I think if you like Fourth Wing and Harry Potter, you might like it.

My rating: 3.75/4 ⭐

SUMMARY
We follow Medra Pendragon, a half fae who sacrificed herself to destroy her evil grandfather. Instead of dying she is reborn in another world: Sangratha, a kingdom ruled by vampires. She has lost her magic powers and is discovered by Prince Blake Drakharrow, who realizes that Medra possesses the traits of a legendary dragon rider bloodline thought to be extinct for centuries.

Blake takes her to the Black Keep, where his uncle Viktor Drakharrow rules over the vampire nobility. Medra convinces Viktor the spare her life by suggesting that she may be able to bring the dragons back. She is then magically bound to Blake against her will and named his second betrothed consort, creating tension with his first betrothed, Regan.

Medra is then sent to Bloodwing Academy, an elite school that trains the future leaders of the four ruling vampire houses.

QOTD: What fantasy romance would you always recommend?
