- My least favorite books are The Stand. That’s it
- I grew up reading Animorphs and that’s what got me into reading

-Other than reading I enjoy working out, watching shows with my wife, traveling and Craft coffee and beer

DUNGEON CRAWLER CARL

Yes. It’s the book everyone is STILL talking about. The book that has been hyped by Bookstagram and one that I believe lives up to that hype. I picked this up last year while I was in a huge reading slump. I wasn’t enjoying reading like I used to and decided maybe it was time to jump on the DCC train. And this might have been the most fun book I have ever read.

I feel like there’s not much that can be said about this book that hasn’t already been said. Aliens take over planet earth and dungeons pop up all over and people run into them and are thrown into an RPG world where they must fight to survive and level up

It’s ridiculous in all the best ways. It’s got a sassy talking cat named Princess Donut. Fun surprises and twists. I usually don’t laugh out loud when reading books but DCC had me cracking up! Has fun character development and interactions. It’s action packed and thrilling! I feel like this book has something for everyone. By far the easiest 5⭐️ cannot recommend it enough!

I am still working my way through the sequels which I have also enjoyed. I need to pick up the ones that are currently released soon… by @bookreviewdrew

Here’s an update of the spooky reads I have read halfway through October!
Obviously, my tbr changed because I am a mood reader but I am still hoping to get to the few I wanted to read earlier in the month.

I really enjoyed Monster Under the Bed and It Came From Neverland. Both had some creepy storytelling and moments.

Monster Under the Bed- Enjoyed the way that the author made humans more terrifying than the actual monsters. Some ambiguity made me love it all the more. This one kept me wanting to read all day and night.

Neverland- What is not to love about a Disney retelling where Peter Pan is an abusive child killer? Seriously creepy how the script is flipped and Hook is a good guy. A fun, dark and quick read!

Spite House- DNF. This was very boring and multiple POV’s for such a short book made me not interested in finishing.

Currently reading Zone One and enjoying it so far!

Here are my October picks for potential reads. I am not sure if I’ll get to all of them but I am sure I am going to try. Carrion Comfort is a large but the others are fairly short so I think I’ll be able to do it. I read horror books all year round but once spooky season hits it’s all I want to read.

With 3 months left of the year, here are some physical books I am going to prioritize. Now, as you know I am a huge mood reader and hardly ever stick to a plan 😆 but I want to try. I feel like this is a good mix of genres so hopefully that will help me finish these books. A lot of these have been on my shelves for a long time and some are new

- A Child Alone with Strangers by Philip Fracassi
- The Ending Writes itself by Evelyn Clarke
- Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck
- The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch by Philip K. Dick
- Out by Natsuo Kirino
- The List of Seven by Mark Frost
- Klara and the Sun by Kazuo Ishiguro
- the Sixth Nik by Daniel Kraus

Thank you @macmillanusa and @torbooks for this gifted early copy of The Thrice Bound Fool by Christopher
Buehlman. Christopher is seeing a huge success with his Between Two Fires recently, but have you started this series?

I won’t bore you with a synopsis. It’s online, it’s on Goodreads. It’s a dark fantasy with high stakes, dangerous journey, monsters and mysterious conspiracies. I really enjoyed the first book of our favorite thief, Kinch Na Shannack. The second book just made the series even more of an epic. The world is expanded upon and still has Christopher’s signature humor that we all love. The sequel feels bigger but also grounded. It was emotional and lighthearted. The magic system is a lot of fun and different than other fantasy books I have read recently.

I loved Kinch and Galva’s witty banter that turns into something deeper as they continue on their journey. If you have read the first book and loved it you will really love the sequel. I am now impatiently waiting for the 3rd book.

Lost Man’s Lane by Scott Carson

Synopsis: A supernatural coming of age novel about sixteen year old Marshall Miller who gets pulled over for a speeding ticket. As the cop is issuing the ticket Marshall sees a woman in the backseat crying. A few weeks later he sees the same woman’s face on a missing persons poster. Strange things begin to happen and Marshall finds himself thrust into a world of evil supernatural forces that plague his town.

I loved this book. It was nostalgic, unsettling and atmospheric. The story had me sucked in wondering what was happening and it had me on the edge of my seat. I realized like Marshall. He was flawed and relatable. I can’t imagine being his age and all that happening to me. There were some truly creepy scenes.
As unsettling and dark as this book got. There were lots of heartwarming moments especially with his mom and Kerri, his neighbor crush.

Both of these 4-5⭐️ books give me fall/winter vibes. Both stories share similar atmospheric themes. They both have isolated and wilderness themes with unforgiving natural landscapes. They share the deep familial bonds and characters who will do whatever it takes to protect those they care about. Both are slow burn suspense novels that are best read with cool weather and a blanket.
I need more books like these when fall weather eventually arrives.

What do these books have in common?

I loved every one of these. They were thrilling and mysterious and kept me turning the pages quickly to find out what was going on. There were also twists that I didn’t see coming. At least…I think so? You see, I remember very vague details of each of these and do not remember any of the twists or endings to these. All I remember is I enjoyed these books 😂

Sooooo maybe I should reread books?

Four digital books I have read this month that I really enjoyed with a short review of each and star ratings

The Unknown ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ THE best Sager book in years! It didn’t have a crazy twist (at least for me I had it figured out) but it was well written and such a good story.

Confessions ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Devastating. Brilliant thriller that had me in the edge of my seat the whole time.

The Man in the Watch Still Visits Me at Night by @jaceycockrobin ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I loved this book. It was described as House of Leaves meets David Lynch and boy what the heck did I read? Starts slow with tension that slowly bubbles beneath the surface until it gets so bonkers. PUB date 9/22

Legendborn ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This was a great YA fantasy and I am looking forward to starting the sequel soon by @bookreviewdrew

To Washington by @ross_gentry
Many thanks for a copy of your book for an honest review!

Where has Wash Westmore gone? A congressman is exhausted with the capital and decides to leave and go back to nature with his father’s journals as his guide. It’s a journey that will reveal more about himself, those who went before him like Theodore Roosevelt, John Muir and Thoreau.

I loved this quiet story. It was so descriptive of the outdoors that I took this photo as a reminder to get out of the office and into nature. Wash’s trek was one of self discovery and growth which are some of my favorite stories. This book delves into a lot of history some of which I knew and other events and stories that made me curious to look up the facts. There was also a lot of political critiquing of all sides which I found fascinating and refreshing. There was a lot of commentary but it never felt like it overpowered the story or forced in your face to think one way over another.

It made me pause and reflect. How do I feel about this political climate right now? (Woof. I think we can all agree we all feel a bit jaded right now) it me want to go and disappear in the woods with my wife and daughter. I gave this a solid 4 ⭐️ by @bookreviewdrew
