Top 10 Reads from my 2025 🏆

I read most of my favourites in the first half of the year. Once I hit my reading goal by mid-year, I started snoozing and mostly picking review copies for the second half.

All in all, a great year. So many favourites. For different reasons.❤️‍🩹📚

“There just aren’t enough books that address our inner world scientifically. It is left to fiction to carry the heavy burden of catharsis that non-fiction somehow avoids.”

That is precisely the gap Trauma Nation attempts to fill, and does so with remarkable clarity and compassion.

In a society where trauma is often dismissed, normalised, or buried beneath phrases like “move on” and “be strong,” @mindthepattern confronts it head-on. What makes her book stand apart from existing literature on trauma is its distinctly Indian lens. Rather than treating trauma as an isolated psychological phenomenon, Lamba places it at the centre of India’s social fabric, within families, classrooms, marriages, workplaces, communities, and even collective history.

The book explores how childhood adversities echo through adult relationships, how trauma resurfaces through the body as illnesses, how belief systems shift in the face of suffering, and how historical tragedies leave emotional imprints that trickle down through generations. It asks difficult questions from every angle. How do we identify trauma? How does it alter our physiology? What happens when pain remains unresolved for years? And more importantly, how do we heal?

The absolute best thing about Trauma Nation is its ability to balance scientific inquiry with emotional accessibility. Lamba traces the scientific history of trauma while explaining complex psychological concepts in relatable terms.

The author dismantles the misconception that trauma exists only in the immediate aftermath of catastrophe. Sometimes the body postpones collapse. Sometimes survival itself delays grief.

By discussing neurological research that views addiction as a chronic brain disease rather than a moral failing, Trauma Nation challenges deeply ingrained social stigma and invites readers to replace judgement with empathy.

All in all, what makes this book impactful is not just the research, but also its intent. Trauma Nation is written toward the possibility of a psychologically safer society. The kind of non-fiction that helps us understand ourselves and each other a little better. taken in Bangalore, India by @booksbnb

How far or how deeply can those shaped by colonial privilege see through the authenticity of the colonized, when their judgment remains clouded by layers of inherited bias?

You might not have the answer, but I am sure Miss. Aoyama Chizuko has some idea of it.

(Swipe to read the full review)

As much as I was frustrated with Aoyama’s obsession with food, I absolutely loved the idea of women travelling around with no chaperones and eating to their heart’s content.

No exaggerations when I say I wasn’t engrossed by the novel until the final chapters. However, it gave me enough ‘food’ for thought for a day and a half!

If you are a hardcore foodie or a translator, you are going to LOVE this.

It was heartbreaking to see @thebookworm_blr flooding the headlines the past few days after heavy rains that damaged thousands of books.

However, when I dropped by the store yesterday, the place was abuzz with fellow readers helping out the staff, drying soiled books and sorting them, putting in whatever little effort they could. It was such a wholesome moment to witness. The power of a community coming together and rebuilding culture in times of crisis, book by book.

My heart was full. <3

My carry bag was no less so, after spending three hours browsing through stacks that smelled like rain.

📕The Menon Investigation was the first pick after a quick scan. I carried it in my bosom like my firstborn throughout the rest of the search party.

📗Gods and Ends joined the cult soon after.

📘Left no stone unturned to find Anees Salim’s books, but failed miserably. After two grand search attempts, I sought the help of the ever helpful @krishna_bookworm , who moved stacks and stacks, row after row, and found The Blind Lady’s Descendants for me.
“That’s a great book. You should definitely read it,” said a lovely stranger browsing in the same section with a warm smile. I nodded back with one of my own. :) (I love it so much when people do this!)

📙📒 Just as I was thinking of wrapping up the purchase, an unassuming section of the store revealed a row of amazing hardbacks. And there was Isabel Allende! And Nadine Gordimer! And a few more I had to defend myself against, unfortunately. Next time, I promised them, with a heavy heart.

Here is what I brought home. I hope you like the haul. <3
And do try to drop by The Bookworm if you’re in Bangalore. :) <3

@panmacmillanindia

A prisoner forced into war in exchange for freedom.
An imperial mission to colonize distant planets.
A mass-manufactured delusion built on copy-pasted memories.

Together, they shape the contours of Bora Chung’s tale of power, identity and survival.

Red Sword brandishes a futuristic world where people exist as expendable pawns in the Empire’s ambitions, thrown into battles they barely understand. Amid this pandemonium thrives a woman who braves the unknown enemy in an alien terrain, seeking answers to questions left hanging at the edges, about her identity and that of her enslaved companions. The narrative draws from the fate of Korean soldiers sent to fight Russia under the Qing Dynasty, adding a historical subtext of political and cultural displacement to the story’s speculative frame.

The prose carries a certain minimalism often seen in translated Asian literature. At times, this works in favor of the narrative’s sense of dislocation. Like the omnipresent fog that shrouds the setting, a constant disorientation looms over the writing, with limited visibility into the happenings around. It also adds the sense of being “other” in a world that blurs your existence into the margins.

The novel remains plot-driven throughout, with minimal attention to character depth. World-building is sparse, and much remains unexplored between the battle sequences. The last twenty pages carry the most impact, where the story finally sharpens its ideas and emotional stakes. Thought-provoking in parts, but it could have benefited from greater depth and subtlety in execution.

All in all, a dystopian dream sequence for the sci-fi enthusiasts. A novel that reads more like a long short story.

The Prakritic Diet by Dr. Farah Adam Mukadam @dr.farah_momstein
Genre: Health & Wellness / Nutrition

🥗🥗

The Prakritic Diet explores the intersection of ancient wisdom and modern nutrition, focusing on how our unique biological constitutions (Prakriti) dictate how we should eat, move, and live to reach peak vitality. It is a balanced nutrition guide that combines Ayurveda, Unani, and modern medicine to move away from one-size-fits-all diets.

Instead of prescribing restrictive diets, the book focuses on understanding individual body types through doshas (Vata, Pitta, Kapha) and mizaj, helping readers understand how food, seasons, and lifestyle affect them individually.

Who is it for:
→ Readers seeking a simple, sustainable approach to eating
→ Anyone overwhelmed by conflicting diet advice

Clear, structured and easy to follow, this guide is a grounded alternative to trend-driven diet advice.
