The Silverblood Promise - James Logan 🗡️🥸

Finished this last night! If you’re looking to dip your toe into fantasy this feels like a great entry point. It’s got murder mystery, magic, mystical beings, thieves, deception, abit of everything, whilst never feeling like too much.

Lukan and Flea are great characters and the banter between them was really funny. Great duo id like to see more of. Also, Ashra was a nice edition towards the end, would have liked to see more of her earlier on.

The setting was giving me Lock Lamora vibes but it felt a hell of a lot easier for me to follow and enjoy, that being said, it didn’t blow my socks off. That’s is no criticism of the book though, I think it’s just my mood at the moment, when I started it, I was all for abit of fantasy, but by 70% I was saying to Alex “It’s a really good book, I’m enjoying it, I just want it to end” 😂

I think if this was one of the first fantasy books I’d picked up, it would have blown me away but having experienced quite a few now and moving away from them (slightly) recently it felt like stuff I’ve experienced before.

Very well written, great characters, good plot, good pacing, no criticisms to be honest, just not what I’m looking for at the moment 😊

Probably would still pick up the second book in future though when the mood strikes again.

Have you read it? What did you think? Is book two worth going for?

Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? - Philip K Dick

This dialed me in for a 466 - the overwhelming urge to curl up with the cat and watch an 80s classic. 🤓😜

Awesome dystopian sci fi set in a world where the world has been ruined by the fallout from World War Terminus. The people who haven’t left Earth for other colonies work to keep animals, now a sign of social status due to their rarity, all Rick Deckard wants is a real animal to replace his electric sheep 🥹 but to do that he has to hunt 6 illegal androids who are so human-like it’s hard to spot the differences.

I love the way PKD can build these alternate realities, and manages to draw you in, in such a short amount of pages, it’s impressive. Written in the 60s too and doesn’t really feel dated, stands the test of time for sure. It felt a lot lighter and humorous than I remember the movie counterpart being, but it’s been a while since I watched that.

Another banger from PKD.
What do you mean you haven’t seen Blade Runner? 🎵

Coffin Moon - Keith Rosson 🧛🏻🌒

Gotta love a revenge story! Throw in some murderous, blood thirsty vampires and it’s even better. This was a banger 👌

It’s 70s America and it does it so well, never beating around the bush and managing to paint a picture so clear you almost feel like you’re there.

The main character Duane is very likeable, a flawed fella with a chequered past, trying his best, for himself and his family, when trouble steps into his home/workplace and throws a spanner in the works. By doing the honourable thing, he brings himself a world of pain.

Duane and his thirteen year old niece, Julia riddled with grief and anger, set out on a journey to find vengeance for the murder of the rest of their family.

It’s creepy, gruesome and gory as fuck 😂 there’s a certain eeriness to a vampire that kills not just to eat but for the love of power and causing a scene. Varley is a psychotic animal of a character, leaving a brutal mess in his wake. There are violent descriptions in here that made me gasp and my toes curl. 💀

I felt a great connection to both Duane and Julia, as you learn what they’ve been through in their past that’s brought them to this point. Why they feel so driven to chase down such an unstoppable force, and how far they will actually go to get the revenge they seek 👀

It’s been a while since a book kept me awake til 2am cause i genuinely couldn’t stop 😂

Loved it 👌

Have you read Coffin Moon? Any other suggestions for spooky season reads?

Never Let Me Go - Kazuo Ishiguro 😵‍💫

Apologies for the passionate hate but omg this has to be the most frustrating thing I’ve read this year. I pushed through gritting my teeth and hating every minute of it, wishing I hadn’t bothered tbh 😂

Klara and the sun was a bit disappointing, but this one just takes the biscuit. It’s been on my TBR for ages and while it has won the Nobel prize for literature, I had high hopes. Then hearing it had a sci-fi twist really peaked my interest and expectations.

It’s told from what is supposed to be someone looking back at their younger years but still narrates like a scatter brained child. I found it so irritating every time a story would redirect because the time isn’t right or something else had to be told first, and outright saying that rather than just plotting the narrative in the correct order.

I don’t know, maybe it’s just me but I couldn’t get over how annoying that was, and how little was actually happening throughout. I didn’t feel any sort of connection to the characters, OK Tommy abit, at first but it didn’t really blossom into anything I truly cared about, it just got worse and worse as it went on. Yes it was sad and hopeless but Jesus Christ it could have been more interesting getting to that inevitable end.

This will probably upset some folk, maybe I’m just an uncultured arsehole but this has ruined my day 😂

Rant over.

Persepolis Rising - James SA Corey 🧬🛰️🪐

7/9 Expanse books complete 🥺 I’m honestly dreading finishing this series, don’t know what I’m gonna do with myself, I’ve found it really comforting the past few months always having one of these just round the corner to return to.

In Persepolis Rising, 30 years has passed since the end of Babylon’s Ashes and it had me genuinely nervous thinking my favourite character might have died from old age 🤣🤣🤣 I cannot tell you the relief I felt when she finally popped up 20% in. I was listening to the audio whilst cooking and the Alex heard me cheer with joy 🥺😃 can’t imagine all this without Avasarala’s brains and wit pulling the strings.

Thankfully, the amount of POVs has returned to a normal level after the 19 that we followed in BA 🥲 I love how James SA Corey manages to draw you into all POVs and feel for them all in some way, even the antagonists you end up feeling for in some way. Santiago Singh was just in way over his head in this one, mad some questionable decisions here but ultimately is just someone trying to do their best to get home to their family 😰

We’re finally seeing humans successfully harness the power of the protomolecule and its looking pretty hopeless for the people on the wrong side of things, pretty nervous about how the Laconians seem so reasonable so far though..🤔so confident in their power? Surely the shit is about to hit the fan?

Have you read Persepolis rising?

Do you have any suggestions of series that can live up to this when I’ve finished The Expanse?

Please let me know cause I’m gonna be lost😵‍💫

September Wrap 📆📚

Had a bit of a slow start to the month and I’ve also had a few soft DNFs this month, you know when you just realise the time isn’t right, your not feeling it, but you will at some point? 😓 I started and stopped, Ashes of Man, The Left Hand of Darkness AND Children of Time, cause I just wasn’t feeling any of them, more of a me thing than the books for sure ..

Also had a moment of panic when I realised I only had 3 Expanse books left 🥺 getting through that way too quick, so it pushed me to pick up Red Rising again and I had so much fun just having a break from the pressure of the TBR and the overwhelming amount of choice I’ve put on my plate. It felt like walking into my home on a cold day, returning to these characters and story I already know I love..

What’s been your favourite read of September? 📚
