10 years ago, I did my first 100 Day Project and it completely changed my life. It’s a simple premise – repeat a creative action every day for 100 consecutive(ish🤷‍♀️) days – but not so simple to complete.

I’ve now attempted 6 of these projects, with varying degrees of success:
2015: #bookyfelt - 100 plush beasts
2016: #100FeltFaces - plush squares
2017: #100Pockets - t-shirt pockets
2018: #100Poms - yarn pom-poms
2019: #2500squares - random-generated crochet
2020: #100PaintPals - generator-inspired painted blocks

Through these creative trials, I learned so much about myself and how I learn. I befriended failure (turns out mistakes are just friends who don’t have eyeballs yet), figured out how to capture experiments as stories, and unlocked how to absorb inspiration everywhere.

As evident in the list above, my practice started to break down during lockdowns (along with my brain in general tbh). Now a few years later, my creative muscles feel pretty atrophied: I struggle to make stuff and I especially struggle to share the stuff I do make. It’s not a nice feeling and it’s causing all kinds of problems!

So I’m trying again and starting small: 3cm, in fact. ⬛️

The 100dp officially kicks off tomorrow and I’m rusty but ready. Cross your fingers for me: I’m going to make 100 lil felt pin pals! 📌🤞

Meet Gwock! 🥑 Day 77 of #100pinpals

I‘m sorry to admit that I‘m not feeling so hot on Gwock. Something is off-balance, maybe too much embroidery detail or not enough face? Whatever it is, I dragged my feet for 5 DAYS to summarize this square and totally threw off my daily routine. Gwock‘s revenge 👿

Meet Pitaya! 🐲 Day 76 of #100pinpals

In the first half of this project, I discovered within myself an unexpected obsession with wee beads. These diverse little things add absolutely glorious textures and repetitive processes to the stitching steps. While I may not have touched any beads for the last year, I certainly haven’t stopped thinking of them or awaiting the day we’d reunite. Well, that day was today! 😍

A classic late night snack. I wish I’d spent a bit more time considering a clever face design but sometimes it’s nice to just poke some holes in felt before bed, y’know? 🤷‍♀️

Meet Flamma! 🔥 Day 71 of #100pinpals

Spending a lot of time thinking about campfires these days. 🤫 This old doodle finally came to life once I figured out I could make a convincing front-facing log by rolling two bits of brown felt and tapering the sides. I’m not sure it looks as good in the picture as it does IRL but I must say, I really love this log! 🪵

Meet Seeya! 🛍️ Day 70 of #100pinpals

Tackling two tiny tasks: making a bag pin and practicing my wee letter stitching. Another homage to an iconic object – the smiley plastic shopping bag. I think sticking to a square did me a disservice this time: the straps feel too stubby! But Seeya makes me happy all the same. One I’d particularly like to wear!

Meet Winket! 🍱 Day 69 of #100pinpals

A celebration of my #1 fave coping mechanism: trinket hunting. 🥰 It’s the perfect collision of my interests: curious characters, rescued trash and scraps, wee “thought-of-you” gifts, historical materials and processes, digging in dusty thrift stores, colourful dopamine decorating. I had an excellent time scanning the various memory-filled shelves of my studio to figure out Winket’s objects!

Meet Coam! 🍯 Day 68 of #100pinpals

I’ve been on an embroidery kick the last few days but was looking for a break from randomized french knots. Approached the challenge of stitching a precise pattern (following a handmade template) but after several failed attempts, definitely not feeling mastered. Maybe there’s some sashiko practice in my future!

Meet Clud! 🌩️ Day 67 of #100pinpals

Clud has existed in doodle form for years. I always expected he would come to life on a particularly stormy or grouchy day, but in the end I simply needed a simple idea on a busy day. His grumps feel a little misplaced but I’m sure they’ll make sense some day.
