I cannot emphasize this enough, if you are planting any size foodplot that isnt a “throw n grow” type blend, you should be soil testing, correcting PH and fertilizing…. This should not be an optional step!!! If you took fertilizing away from a farmer, chances are they would not waste their time and money even planting!!! Amend your soil and reap the rewards …. To till or not to till??? TBH I only till when I feel like it’s absolutely necessary! I typically mow, wait 2-4 weeks and then spray glyphosate and seed at the same time … if you decide to try this method you should increase your seeding rate by 1/4-1/2 …. Food plotting made easy!!! If you have access to a hand sprayer and weed eater you can put in foodplots with some sweat equity …. All Boonetown Seed Blends can be top sowed with a broadcaster or even just your hands …. Even where equipment cant be used, Cut or mow anything thats tall, wait 2 weeks and spray the area with a broad spectrum herbicide like glyphosate then broadcast seed the same day. Its always ideal to soil test but in a pinch putting 150lbs of 19-19-19 fertilizer per acre will work …. Sit back and watch the results grow and the wildlife gorge!!! What does proper seeding rate actually look like on a field of Brassicas??? It’s going to look like you underseeded for the first 3 or 4 weeks!!! Probably 90% of the people that I talk to put their brassicas in so thick it looks like a green carpet a week after germination, then when winter comes the foods gone … if you want long lasting early fall to late winter food with a brassica plot you need to follow seed rates regardless how it looks to start, it will feel like you’re not seeding nearly enough. 100lbs of 46-0-0 and 150-250 lbs of 6-24-24 and youll have so much food they wont be able to clean it all up!!!!
