We’re teaming up with @nurturebynaps to talk about breastfeeding!

Hi, Emily Silver, Family NP, IBCLC and co-founder of @nurturebynaps here. 👋

One of the biggest questions we hear from breastfeeding families is:

“How do I know my baby is getting enough milk?”

Unlike a bottle, you can’t see the ounces. So instead of focusing on volume, we look at the baby.

Here are three of our favorite signs:

🤱 You can hear or see swallowing.
Your baby isn’t just comfort sucking. You should notice rhythmic sucks followed by swallows throughout the feeding.

😌 Your baby seems satisfied after eating.
They come off the breast on their own, their hands relax, and they seem calm and content after the feed.

💧 They’re making plenty of wet diapers.
Once your milk has come in, we expect at least 6 wet diapers every 24 hours. Wet diapers are one of the best signs your baby is taking in enough milk.

And of course, over time, we also want to see healthy weight gain and your baby growing along their curve.

If you’re still unsure, don’t guess.

This is exactly what lactation consultants are here for. We can assess your baby’s latch, watch a feeding, answer your questions, and even do a weighted feed to measure how much milk your baby transferred at the breast. Visit our NAPS page @nurturebynaps to see if you are in network for an insurance covered telehealth visit with an RN or NP who is also an IBCLC.

Breastfeeding is a learned skill for both you and your baby. You don’t have to figure it out alone. 🤍

Did you worry about your milk supply in those early weeks? You’re definitely not the only one. Share your experience below. 👇 by @booninc

Hi! It’s your Registered Nurses and IBCLCs from @nurturebynaps here with tips on what actually helps your gassy baby. Around 3-4 weeks of age, babies really start to “wake up” to the world. They’re more alert, more vocal, and yes...often more gassy.

In fact, we know statistically speaking that gassy and fussy behavior tends to peak around 6-8 weeks of age!

The important thing to know? Your baby has a tiny, immature digestive system and the struggle is real.

They’re learning how to:
✨ Eat
✨ Digest
✨ Burp
✨ Pass gas

And honestly, working out a fart is hard work when you’re 6 weeks old 😂

Here are a few things we recommend:

🤱 Recline the feed
If you’re breastfeeding and have a fast letdown or oversupply, leaning back (into a reclined breastfeeding position) can help put gravity on your baby’s side so they can better control the flow of milk.

🍼 Pace the bottle
Use a slow flow nipple and keep the bottle more parallel to the ground so your baby can pace their feed. This allows them to suck, swallow and take breaks as needed.

💨 Burp during feeds
Don’t wait until the end. Taking burp breaks throughout a feeding can help release swallowed air before it builds up. You will know when your baby needs that break because they start getting red in the face or arching their back while feeding.

🦠 Consider a daily probiotic
One of the few evidence-backed interventions we have for gassy babies is a daily infant probiotic. Some studies have shown improvements in crying time and digestive comfort.

🚲 Bonus tip: Bicycle those legs and lots of tummy time!
Movement helps move gas through the GI tract. Diaper changes are the perfect time to do bicycle legs, tummy presses, or gentle circles. Try tummy time before a feed so that they can compress their belly into the ground and possibly release some air.

Tell us in the comments what worked best for your gassy newborn 💨🫶 by @booninc
