A little autumn flair.

In the Old Potting Sheds, Callianthe megapotamica continues to delight, its delicate, lantern-like flowers suspended from slender stems. With scarlet-red calyces and golden petals that curve gently outwards, each bloom resembles a tiny Chinese lantern, bringing a sense of lightness and movement to this sheltered corner of the Garden.

Native to South America, this graceful plant has thrived through the heat of summer, rewarding us with its distinctive, pendulous flowers well into autumn.

As the Garden settles into a slower rhythm, it is a pleasure to find such exuberance still flourishing - a reminder that every season holds its own quiet surprises.

Last Saturday, curiosity led us beneath the canopy and into the fascinating world of fungi.

Guided by naturalists Michael and Clare Blencowe, our fungi walk took us through Borde Hill’s South Park and into the depths of Dinosaur Wood, revealing the extraordinary variety of species hidden within the landscape.

From mighty Lacquered Bracket fungi on ancient oaks to delicate parachute mushrooms on the woodland floor, each discovery offered a glimpse into this intricate, often overlooked world. Among the more unusual finds were the tiny Conifercone Cap growing from a fallen pine cone and the curious Glue Crust forming bonds on hazel branches.

The morning ended with tea, coffee, chocolate cookies and plenty of fungi chat, as everyone shared their discoveries.

A lovely reminder that there is always more to discover when we take the time to look a little closer at the natural world around us.

Thank you to Michael and Clare, and to everyone who joined us for such a fascinating morning.

There is a particular stillness to an autumn morning on the South Park, when mist settles softly across the grass and the first light of day finds its way through the trees.

Beneath the canopy of an acer, the changing season reveals itself in layers of colour. Deep crimson crowns give way to burnished gold, with the last traces of green lingering below — a quiet reminder that nature rarely changes all at once. Each leaf holds its own moment in the turning season.

Across the dew-covered grass, sunlight catches the mist, illuminating the landscape in a gentle, glistening haze.

At Borde Hill, these are the moments that invite us to pause, breathe deeply and watch the Garden transform, one morning at a time.

As the Garden takes on the softer tones of autumn, Salvia guaranitica 'Black and Blue' brings a touch of midnight magic to the Autumn Border.

Its deep, velvety blooms emerge in shades of inky blue, rising above the fresh green foliage and creating a striking contrast against the season's warm golds and russets.

There is something wonderfully unexpected about this rich, jewel-like colour at a time when the Garden begins to mellow, yet still holds moments of remarkable intensity.

Beyond its beauty, this late-flowering salvia offers a valuable source of nectar for visiting pollinators, extending the season of abundance a little longer.

At Borde Hill, we delight in these moments of contrast - the quiet interplay of colour, texture and light that makes the autumn garden so wonderfully distinctive.

As autumn settles across Borde Hill, the woodland floor begins to reveal another, quieter world.

Beneath fallen leaves and moss, fungi emerge in all their curious forms - delicate, sculptural, strange and fleeting. From woodland paths to the roots of ancient trees, mushrooms become part of the season’s rich tapestry, returning nutrients to the soil and playing an essential role in the life of the landscape.

This UK Fungus Day, Clare Blencowe joins us for a foraging walk around the estate, discovering the fascinating fungi that appear as the days grow shorter and the soil dampens.

A chance to look a little closer at the ground beneath our feet and discover a hidden world that so often goes unnoticed.

Beneath the tree canopy, shrubs are often the quiet heroes of the Garden.

At Borde Hill, they are an integral part of our planting philosophy - softening woodland edges, protecting and enriching the soil, providing habitats for wildlife, and creating the rich tapestry of colour, texture and fragrance that makes every season in the Garden so distinctive.

As our climate changes, this middle layer is becoming all the more important. Thoughtfully chosen shrubs can help gardens retain moisture, moderate extremes of temperature and build resilience, proving that beautiful planting can also be practical.

Today, our Head Gardener, Mark Bobin, is at The Newt in Somerset, joining horticulturalists from across the country for the annual Head Gardeners Conference. This year’s conversations will focus on the future role of shrubs in British gardens and landscapes in a changing climate.

Inspired to plant at home? Think in layers. Pair trees with a diverse mix of shrubs to create a garden that is not only beautiful, but better equipped for the future. Some of our Garden team’s favourites to plant this season are Viburnum macrocephalum ‘Chinese Snowball’, Berberis thunbergii ‘Japanese Barberry’ and Itea ilicifolia ‘Holly-leaved Sweetspire’.

At Borde Hill, every layer tells part of the story - together, they create gardens that endure for generations to come.

A passing shower brings a gentle pause across the estate.

For a fleeting moment, the Garden quietens, roses shimmer, jewel-like against the green, their petals catching every drop.

There’s something rather beautiful about rain at Borde Hill; the kind that arrives gently, lingers briefly, and leaves everything glistening in its wake.

A little reminder that even on the greyest days, the Garden is still full of colour.

As the Garden gently settles into a slower rhythm, the roses leave behind one final flourish.

Rose hips glow among the fading foliage, their warm tones heralding the arrival of autumn. Once the flowers have passed, these small fruits become a valuable source of nutrition for birds and wildlife - carrying the Garden forward into the quieter months ahead.

To enjoy rose hips in your own garden, resist deadheading every rose in late summer and leave some spent flowers uncut to develop into fruit. Your garden will gain a beautiful seasonal display - and the birds may thank you too.

Sometimes, the most beautiful moments in the Garden come as one season quietly gives way to the next.

A month of changing light, crisper mornings and colour that is ablaze across the landscape.

October brings its own vibrant colour palette - clouds of blue asters, golden rudbeckias and delicate dahlias holding onto the last of the summer warmth. Cyclamen blush beneath the trees, while colchicums joyfully paint shades of lilac through the grass. Across the estate, leaves begin to glimmer in shades of amber and scarlet, berries deepen and rose hips glow amongst the fading roses.

This month, there is beauty to be found not only in what is still flowering, but also in the signs of what’s to come.

At home, get spring-flowering bulbs such as daffodils, crocuses and hyacinths into flower beds or containers, and plant hardy perennials while the soil still holds its warmth.

As the first frosts approach, tender plants such as dahlias may need wrapping, or lifting and storing over winter.

October is a month for planting with patience - enjoying the garden as it transitions and quietly preparing for the season ahead.
