A favourite tree at Borde Hill: found on the edge of Dinosaur Wood, is this wonderful veteran field maple, Acer campestre. Much larger and more imposing than you’d expect of our only native maple, it provides excellent roosting opportunity for bats (fave!), birds and insects. Its limbs reach, arc and twist; its trunk appears scored as if by huge clawing creatures; it spins its helicopter seeds as gently as we hope for a resilient next generation taking root . A giant of a tree that’s well worth seeking out.

A study in green 🌿

Soft greens, textured greens, greens that soak in the light, and greens tucked away just waiting to be found.

There’s something so calming about a space that thrives in layered shades. The joy becomes less about searching for colour, and more about following texture, pattern and contrast - glossy leaves against matte ones, fine details beside broader shapes, the way the light dances across them all.

These moments, gathered in the beauty of the Round Dell @bordehillgarden, tell the story of how green can be just as striking as bloom.

Borde Hill Gardens 🌹Summer Season
Jay Robin’s rose garden is bursting with foxgloves, flowering dogwood, delphiniums, lavender and roses.

June can beam down with sunshine and chuck down with rain all at once but just smell the roses and remember life is a ride.

The secret garden has reopened! Celebrating the new beginnings for @bordehillgarden’s Walled Garden. Reimagined by @ann_mariepowell, packed with edimentals, and with the indoor glasshouse and outdoor dining space each immersed in the planting, the @iscabordehill restaurant is a wonderful reminder of the value of eating seasonally and locally.

Soft Archive | edition fourteen.

There’s an old feeling to the beginning of May, and the garden seemed to lean into it - paths disappearing into green, ferns unfurling like secrets finally shared, blooms arriving in unexpected places.

Even the light feels enchanted. Soft gold caught between leaves, turning ordinary corners into something from a forgotten tale.

Perhaps this is why old stories speak so fondly of May - the month where the earth stops hesitating.

The Soft Archive | edition twelve

From the week the equinox arrived. A moment of balance - light and dark, day and night. Then the world tilts again and we creep toward longer days.

It was a week of small moments. A moment with the spring blooms nestled against the ground. A moment with the red kite circling overhead. A moment at the Market Garden with little plants that will soon bring big flavours.

Sky, soil and time meeting like old friends, ushering in change. Not all at once though, slowly, which feels like a better way to do most things.
