I just finished reading Before I Forget, the upcoming release from @peirenepress. It's wonderful.

It's a book about the death of an imperfect but beloved dad that often made me laugh out loud.

It's about the politics of end of life care, and all the admin, family reckonings, and reminiscences that come with death.

Told with veracity, compassion, and a biting sense of humour, it's easy to see why this book won awards on its release in France.

I can't wait to talk with @elleenfiledesperles and @wordsofdina about it when they visit Borderless Books on 5th October.

Tickets available via the link in bio from £6 if you'd like to join us, a glass of wine included. taken in Stroud, Gloucestershire by @borderless_books

Lucy's Picks!

If you've been into the shop recently, you've probably seen my recommendation for this - I love anything set in a remote location, and At the Edge of the Woods is one of those books that completely pulls you into the setting. If you've ever felt the urge to disappear to a cabin surrounded by forests and mountains - this is for you. The perfect cosy autumn read.

Mouse's latest trip takes him to the mountains, and it's the prettiest book in the shop right now. Complete with gorgeous illustrations, flaps, and a beautiful journey, I'd very much like to live inside this book.

What's your favourite local bookseller been reading recently? These gems 💫

In an effort to read more cheerfully I devoured David Sedaris' latest essay collection, The Land and Its People. A solid 10/10 for laugh out loud lines.

Next up was Country People by Daniel Mason, a story of a family who move to the countryside and the mad mythical antics that unfold. Set in Vermont but could totally imagine this taking place on the edges of Stroud.

Dogs on Dates is a funny and touching graphic novel by Luke Healy, which made it onto my reading list on @cally_mac_ 's strong recommendation. Did not disappoint. Adults should read more cartoons.

Bookseller privileges mean I got to read the new Barbara Kingsolver novel, Partita, before it's released in a few weeks and it is SO GOOD. No spoilers but seriously order a copy now you will not be disappointed.

And finally, Theft, which we read together for Borderless Book Club and is up there with my fave books of the year. Outrageous that Abdulrazak Gurnah's work isn't more widely read (he has won a Nobel prize, after all).

For more chit chat about what we've been reading at the bookshop come see us IRL, we beat any algorithm when it comes to recommendations x by @borderless_books

Spend an evening with the Forward Prize Best Single Poem shortlist at Borderless Books in Stroud as we continue to mark the National Year of Reading.

Together we’ll read, unpick and argue for the lines we love (and hate?) looking at how each poem works, where it risks and what makes it award‑worthy. Reading groups give people a place to practise attention - to sit with complexity, ambiguity and difference, all of which we will celebrate and explore in this session.

This is a one‑off, in‑person workshop for readers and writers who want to sharpen their instincts and feel the pulse of contemporary poetry with their bare hands!

The Forward Prize for Best Single Poem recognizes outstanding individual poems, with recent winners showcasing diverse voices and themes in contemporary poetry.

This year’s shortlist includes five poems by Tara Bergin, Kizziah Burton, Alexandra Corrin-Tachibana, Fiona Larkin and Riwa Saab. You can read all of these poems online here.

The group will be led by poet JLM Morton. by @borderless_books
