In preparation for an upcoming exhibition in October, the metal fittings for my furniture have arrived.
In my work, I primarily use hinges and fittings crafted from cupronickel (white brass). At first glance, they might resemble factory-made stainless steel hinges. However, because each piece is individually cut, shaped, and finished by hand, every single one varies slightly in size and form.
I appreciate cupronickel because it carries a sharper, crisper presence than brass, yet lacks the cold sterility of stainless steel.
Traditional metal hardware is named according to its function and placement. The T-shaped fitting shown in the photo is called ‘gamjabi’. It is mainly used to reinforce the joints where the vertical posts and horizontal rails meet on the front of a piece, secured in place with handcrafted cupronickel nails.
The master artisans who craft these fittings, hinges, and locks are known as duseokjang. For this project as well, I had the privilege of commissioning Master artisan Yang Hyun-seung to craft these custom hinges and ornaments. by @bori_studio

Wood is constantly affected by humidity and temperature, repeatedly expanding and contracting, with warping and twisting being everyday occurrences.
Therefore, when making furniture, one must carefully accommodate and balance these natural characteristics of the material.
When the situation demands that this wood movement be suppressed to the utmost degree, cross-laminating multiple layers of wood makes the work far more manageable.
This is the principle behind the everyday plywood we commonly see.
Historically in Korea, craftsmen achieved this laminated structure through traditional techniques known as ssamjil or tanggaejil, using cords and wedges to press the boards tightly together. by @bori_studio

My work is deeply rooted in the heritage of Korean wooden furniture.
Rather than strictly replicating traditional Joseon Dynasty furniture, I reinterpret its structural wisdom and decorative sensibilities, which have always held a profound fascination for me.
A signature technique in my work is Ssangsa (also known as Soegol)—the deliberate carving of delicate, parallel grooves along the horizontal rails (Soemok) and vertical muntins (Dongja). To allow these continuous flutes to meet seamlessly at structural intersections, the joinery demands an intricate mitered mortise-and-tenon joint, traditionally known as Jebichok (swallowtail miter joint).
While this historic decorative technique requires meticulous craftsmanship and time, it subtly divides otherwise flat surfaces, creating rhythmic shadows and delicate tactile nuances that only reveal their true depth upon close, quiet observation. by @bori_studio
