POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Today, Numéro art visits @wiels_brussels for @ali.cherri 's exhibition, curated by @helenakritis . The show brings together, for the first time, several of the artist’s most emblematic works. For the occasion, we’re sharing a portrait of Ali Cherri, shot by @boris_camaca for Numéro art 11.

Born in Beirut in 1976, Ali Cherri explores how institutions shape the way history is constructed, preserved and transmitted.

Across films, sculptures, watercolours and installations, the exhibition brings together human figures, fragmented statues and hybrid forms, reflecting on the ways stories are collected, presented and passed on.

Film plays a central role in Ali Cherri’s practice. Drawing on documentary, fiction and archival material, his moving-image works often bring together archaeological sites, museums, landscapes and personal narratives. By moving between past and present, and between fact and fiction, his films question how images and stories contribute to the construction of history. They also examine what happens to objects, places and memories when they are removed from their original context and transformed into cultural narratives.

Ali Cherri’s practice often explores the relationship between the human figure, architecture and the structures that surround us. His sculptures also bring together materials such as mud, bronze, marble and found stone, challenging traditional ideas around permanence, value and heritage. By incorporating archaeological fragments into his work, Ali Cherri further explores the ways museums present objects and give them new meanings.

On view at WIELS, Brussels, until January 3, 2027.

Last days to go check Locomotion (The Unfinished Path) II, my second solo exhibition @nicoletticontemporary. Closes on Saturday!!!

« The exhibition builds on the cycle of works Camaca developed for his first institutional solo show, held at @platoostrava in 2025-26, where he presented a retrospective of photographs drawn from both his personal archives and his editorials as a fashion photographer. Organised and paired in a seemingly random order, the images were inserted into double-sided wooden frames hanging perpendicularly to the walls, generating an intense superposition of images that physically enacted the layering of pop-up windows on computer screens. »

At NICOLETTi, Camaca reshuffles a selection of these works and presents them in a linear succession that rather evokes rows of books or magazines archived in a library, their covers ranging from lifestyle publications to amateur National Geographic-style photojournalism.
With metal labels indicating the names of the depicted subjects, as well as the time and place where they were shot, Camaca’s works reflects upon systems of categorisation of images while conjuring the tension between control and contingency inherent to photography.

Taking a bit of advance on this week’s opening at @nicoletticontemporary of the show Locomotion part 2, I wanted to go ahead and share a few self portraits made throughout the past years, most of which were already posted here but never gathered all together.
Seeing these after such a long time, I wonder, can photography be a form of performance? Can it go beyond the act of observing and documenting? What happens when the observer gets involved?

The pictures were published in @esquireitalia @massesmagazine @kingkongmagazine
The sculptures were shown at @voiture14lelieu and the spank was previously shown at @nicoletticontemporary
The styling was done by Salomé Poloudenny, @juanvcorrales or myself and a bunch of these pictures were published thanks to @emanueleamighetti
These were shot either in France, Italy, State of New York, Tunisia. taken in Toconoco by @boris_camaca
