I had a great time this morning hosting a workshop on research mindset for solopreneurs and small business owners at @lowcountrylocal

Thank you to everyone who came to talk about all the fuzzy, squishy, difficult to measure business outcomes beyond “make money.” Your time, energy, and insights are so appreciated!

I’ll be turning content from this workshop into a Substack post, so if you’re an #entrepreneur or #smallbusiness please sound off in the comments: what are the business goals or outcomes you have the hardest time measuring? taken in Local Works by @bosanbo

This is probably my favorite photo from my trip to Japan in August. I was there for a study program on neuroscience and design, planning to hit the mountains and Tokyo, but this quick film snapshot of strangers playing in the ocean off Naoshima is the one I keep wanting to look at, again and again. The juicy colors of the dock and floats, the blinding blue of sea and sky, the juxtaposition of playing in nature the foreground against distant Takamatsu behind it. For me, it sums up nearly the whole trip as a feeling.

I’m also in a period of transition right now, floating on my own little dock, not tethered to any particular shore. I cast off earlier this year to go my own way, and I enjoy navigating on my own. I always have. It’s good to be back, but it’s taking some getting used to, feeling that untetheredness again. Not adrift, not unanchored. Just not as firmly attached to any one continent. Fortunately I’m old enough now to understand that transitions are long roads rather than quick left turns, and I am trying to be similarly unattached to any particular timeline for moving through this change.

From now on I will also picture myself happily bobbing in an orange floatie. 🍊🛟

#sketchnotes from @movingboundaries August 2026 Japan cohort. A few people have asked for a tutorial on this - are you in? I will say, before anyone asks: this is a style of note-taking that genuinely helps *me* to both focus and listen. It probably doesn’t help *everyone* focus and listen. You do you, boo. And, as previous colleagues have learned the hard way, sketch notes usually only make sense to the original note taker. 🤗😘

What QUESTIONS do you have? As always, I do not believe dumb questions exist.

Calling all Charleston solopreneurs and small businesses! I’m hosting a meetup at Lowcountry Local First’s awesome coworking space on September 24 for anyone who is itching to measure their business success more holistically. This will be a hands-on session on measuring what actually matters and defining your success beyond revenue. You’ll get the basics of mixed-methods behavioral research from an experienced social scientist with 15 years in the design industry, tailored for a solopreneur or small business scale. By the end, you’ll walk away with at least one starter metric and one simple way to track it on your own terms. This is “just enough research” in practice: no dashboards, no jargon, no AI (unless you want it!)... just a method you can put right into use.

FREE to LCLF members, $10 for non-members. Link to register in my bio.
