I had a great time this morning hosting a workshop on research mindset for solopreneurs and small business owners at @lowcountrylocal

Thank you to everyone who came to talk about all the fuzzy, squishy, difficult to measure business outcomes beyond “make money.” Your time, energy, and insights are so appreciated!

I’ll be turning content from this workshop into a Substack post, so if you’re an #entrepreneur or #smallbusiness please sound off in the comments: what are the business goals or outcomes you have the hardest time measuring? taken in Local Works by @signal.to.method

Calling all Charleston solopreneurs and small businesses! I’m hosting a meetup at Lowcountry Local First’s awesome coworking space on September 24 for anyone who is itching to measure their business success more holistically. This will be a hands-on session on measuring what actually matters and defining your success beyond revenue. You’ll get the basics of mixed-methods behavioral research from an experienced social scientist with 15 years in the design industry, tailored for a solopreneur or small business scale. By the end, you’ll walk away with at least one starter metric and one simple way to track it on your own terms. This is “just enough research” in practice: no dashboards, no jargon, no AI (unless you want it!)... just a method you can put right into use.

FREE to LCLF members, $10 for non-members. Link to register in my bio.

I spent 21 days in Japan this August - nine of them with Moving Boundaries Collaborative, a symposium on cognitive science and architecture hosted at Kyoto Seika University and Espoir Park Inn Teshima. Twelve renowed faculty, along with a cohort of interdisciplinary participants from over thirty-five countries, came together in a unique immersive a format that puts researchers, designers, educators, and category-spanners together with enough intensity and time to explore topics with real depth. I was honored to present alongside friend and colleague Jill Snyder, and cannot overstate the value of the connections I’ve made through this program.

An overview of the program is up on my Substack, including a rundown of the lectures, participant talks, and site visits. I’ve also shared a preview of the more specific essays to come - but I’d love to also know what you want to read more about! I will also share essays and photos from my own personal trip on Substack as well. Please let me know with a comment or DM if there are questions you want me to answer.

Thank you to our Chairs Tatiana A. Berger and Alberto Perez-Gomez, along with all the amazing faculty and participants. If I tried to tag everyone I would wear the prints off my fingers, but the Substack includes links to all our awesome speakers so you can learn more about them. taken in Kyoto, Japan by @signal.to.method

Recent Q&A on Substack: what’s actually worth measuring to show the ROI of research inside a design firm? My honest answer is that you can’t establish your own ROI alone. The business has to help decide what the worth even is. I walk through the five W’s (and a how) I use to get there, plus a story about writing KPIs with a whole team instead of for myself. One of the most common questions I get from students and early-career researchers is what skills they should pick up in *addition* to strong research chops. Great question! I wrote a Substack post about 5 I frequently discuss, and welcome comments to grow the list! Link to my Substack is in my bio.

“We just need a quick survey.”
If you’ve worked in research, you’ve heard it. It’s usually meant as kindness, but there’s a lot hiding underneath those words.

My latest on Signal to Method unpacks why “just a survey” diminishes everyone on the project, why every survey is a piece of project communication, and what to do instead. Link in bio.

Research in the design industry exists now. So what happens next?

I started a Substack called Signal to Method to talk about the sticky stuff: the gap between how we think research gets used and what actually happens. For researchers, designers, students, clients, and anyone who thinks we can do this better.

First post is live. Link in bio.
