“Little Dragon” (7c/5.12d) 🐉 Cát Bà, Vietnam

Originally got huge inspiration to try this route from @drjeffclimbs because of his epic knee bar rest but honestly was intimidated by the length of the route (115 ft; 35m). Fortunately, was able to get a good rundown of the beta from @vuba.tinh and a belay from @madmickeycat! The route had the craziest movement I’ve ever experienced on a route, from a double kneebar, headbar, bodyjam, and even a sitting rest on mushroom that screams yeehaw 🤠🐮.

Had low expectations for this Hanoi trip and actually packed all my TR solo gear in fear that I wouldn’t find partners. Luckily met a whole group of friends, made so many memories, and witnessed one hell of a send train. Shoutout to @madmickeycat @foreign.perycent @htran014 @kyen_10 !!!

Perhaps one day… we come back for “Enter the Dragon” 🐉😊? taken in Cát Bà by @bossclimbs

04.05.2025 - First 5.13a; Voodoo Lounge 🐦‍⬛

Academics were always a guided course; if you failed, someone would always be there to help you remediate. But physical goals are hard; if you gave up on them, dreams get lost in the ether, wither up, and die. So physical accomplishments always meant a lot more to me.

When I first moved to LA for school in 2021, I made it a goal to send 5.13a by the time I graduated. Not having sent anything harder than 5.10a at the time, I didn’t know how I would do it but I’m glad I stayed the course, made the sacrifices, met the right people, and got the buzzer beater.

So much to unpack here (16hrs worth of footage hint hint), but immense thanks to @mercene_ary @quandl @dondannydondanny @zenoclimbs @jsend.mov @midersponkey @davidgoggins (yes…) and many more for being a part of this journey, whether that was for training, belays, outdoor stoke, motivation, or conversation 🙏 taken in New Jack City, Rock Climbing by @bossclimbs

Wanted to send to use this song so bad 🐢

*had to refilm to show better angle of the perch*

Notes for the climb: Catching the F8 undercling in the middle gives the largest surface area; initially tried many grips for many problems that use the undercling but ideally the least straining pull is to hold it almost like an upsidedown jug with openhand. Latch the wooden E12 sloper with fingers on the middle of the hold (most surface area) along with the left thumb engaged. Perch on D7. Shifting the hips leftwards after perching distributes load to more efficiently to bring in the match of the wooden sloper. Microbeta for the move to H15… I actually had to imagine pushing away from the wall with my legs rather than “standing down” with my legs on D7. This pushed my body slightly away from the wall, enough to get enough space from the wall to generate a semicircular momentum rightwards, stand up on my right foot on D7 at the last moment to H15. If I did it right, it really felt like standing up on D7 rather than a campus move. The rest is straightforward.

I remember trying this when the MB 2024 first came out and was not able to comprehend ever sending it in my lifetime. It just felt teeth-grittingly physical. But here’s to consistency & growth 🍻

Notes for the climb: First move to left hand pinch is chill so take the time to establish a really good pinch for the dyno. I used to jump off of the second yellow foot of the top row, but later found that the first yellow foot of the top row to be the best due to a better ability to pull perpendicular to the left blue pinch and thus have it better grip before latching the shallower right hand pinch, H10. Realized the best place to catch H10 to be at the lower part where it is wider. Sending was reliant on catching this “just good enough”; always felt like I was on the verge of falling off but just had to persevere to the next move.

A breakthrough for me on this problem was figuring out the bump into I10. I used to try to coordinate so many things at once hoping to get it, but found an extremely aggressive left foot flag (imagine not only getting it to the 3 o’clock position, but going even further and getting it to 2 o’clock position) set me up very well on load distribution and as a cue for the bump in. Sometimes the simpler you make the cues, the easier it is (just a huge strug to trial what the right cue is).

Having the hand on C15 and coming into C16 felt more like a strength:weight optimization hurdle. Reintroducing one arm pullup training and shoulder external rotation (Aidan Roberts Vacuum Method video) really helped me here. On this day that I sent, on one of the burns I accidently caught C16 with a split pattern (index+middle finger on the left edge of the hold and ring+pinkie on the right edge). This felt better & more ergonomic than previously trying to come in with all four fingers on the right edge right away.

Rest is straightforward/coreheavy. Missed the perfect static send because I didn’t want to fumble the end and pulled the last latch a little too hard, but it is definitely staticable!

Spanny anti-style; we’ll take ittttt.

Notes for the climb:
Found the start to be pretty board dependent based on how thin I5 is, was not doable at Sender One Lakewood but easy at Aliso Viejo. Right knee pointed outwards and getting hips close to wall helps a lot. There’s so many sequences to get the double undercling, tried to find the most efficient version for my body type; found really ulnar deviating the left hand prior to switching from the I10 left open-hand pinch to the left undercling reduced the amount I needed to readjust rather than underclinging with the fingers pointed straight towards the wall.

Move to F15 was intimidating, but after latching it for the first time, got over the mental block. Driving the hips towards the wall during the movement really helps; it’s such a fun move but you have to be really focused on catching the pocket accurately to minimize readjusting. Some people three finger drag F15, but found getting the pinkie in for extra pull to be more helpful.

For some reason, the dyno was a lot easier after I lengthened my right arm, let go of my left hand before and drove with left foot. Initially for first 4 attempts, I tried to lock off the right bicep to get up higher and jumping from there in a more vacuumed, close-to-wall position but would always come up short and not even touch the end hold. Perhaps being less vacummed with body further from wall, right arm more straight, letting go of left hand (overall being a little lower before going for the end) shifted more weight to the left foot to contribute in closing the gap. Matching involves a kip and self-belief that you have enough left in the tank to end controlled.

scream saver, 7B/V8 benchmark, 40°, MoonBoard 2024 setup, set by Dana Rader.

Notes for the climb: Easiest 7B on the 2024 I’ve ever tried, despite being relatively less repeated. Felt just a tad harder than Fishmonger (7A/V6); second go as last attempt of a very limit session. Crossover move looks cool and is not too straining when posterior chain is properly warm. Key to end dyno is rocking hips and body over right foot to use more legs rather than arms to propel.

Finally putting this one away

Notes for the climb: For sitstart, staying low under B5 helps lessen load on fingers. G7 hold is really good, take ample time to line up the fingers well for the G8 crimp. First dyno: personally easier if I slightly kick up with the left leg as i stand up and jump off right foot. Catching I12 at the bottom portion is better part to grip. Ending dyno: prolong gently standing up on the R foot as much as possible, really prioritizing the right knee extension without jumping too explosively and then literally trying to reach out with the right arm as much as possible to get to I18. Hardly jumping forcefully at all; more so just a small push of calf muscle to get me to the end hold. If the right leg jumps too forcefully, there is much less control in the dyno, you’ll lose the left hand, and all the energy you exploded with ends up being energy you’ll have to contain, which is a lot of outward force that can easily make you punt the ending.
