On a recent expedition our Chief Botcho Bozo Archaeoentomologist has uncovered a thought to be extinct Ultra Light fossilised Titanium Dragonfly. Believed to have been flying around 500BC while weighing only 80grams.

Due to its light weight, strength and inherent agility, historians suggest the Ti D-Fly was able to reach speeds of 100km/h making it borderline impossible to catch by its prey.

After an extensive incubation period our scientists have been able to revive the Ti Dragonfly with fresh new bolts, optimised geometry to suit more frame sizes and over half the weight of its predecessor.

This Wizard’s brew has been steeping for a long time. Between pre-ordering the frame in March and it shipping last month — on time, I might note — I had half a year to obsess over every detail, and each passing day further dispensed with any notion of restraint.

What was initially meant to be a simple frame swap with the GT Timberline for its all black components quickly morphed into a far more intensive plan. The whimsy factor was dialled to the extreme and the ingredients for this potion now included the antlers of a bull-moose hybrid, a Babylondian snake, the hand of a kaiju, the wings of a dragonfly, and the skin of a tiger. No gold was formed through this alchemy, but it did spit out a boat load of anodised parts...

As homage to the frame’s @magiccomponents @crumbworks.co origins, I also attempted to source components from as wide a range of Japanese manufacturers as possible. XT groupset, Kuwahara bars, Nitto bar ends, Nissen cable housing, Dia Compe Fairweather headset, Blue Lug headset spacers and rear light, SimWorks/Panaracer Super Yummy tyres, GHOOOST valve cap, Kashimax saddle, NOS Sugino crankset, MKS Gamma pedals and Sylvan Works cargo cage, and even a Minoura bottle cage.

Picked up the last piece of the puzzle over the weekend at @babyldn.bikes — wouldn’t dream of riding around with no bottle in bottle cage @garys.projects — as well as some new clobber by way of the crumbworks collab which was too serendipitous a drop to deny.

Some other notable bits: a marigold decal-matching Ron’s Bikes Fabio’s Clap Trap, a fried egg reflector (handmade in the UK from recycled material by my mate Oli’s mum!), and a Meroca dropper post picked to match the brass headset spacers — which in riding terms might be the most exciting bit of a pretty whacky build.

This build turned out to be a bit of a departure from most of my previous ones but puts the biggest smile on my face and seems equally amusing to everyone else who comes across it, so I suppose it best captures the essence of what I think a bike should be. Big thanks to Magic Components for being such great facilitators of fun, and whose design choices nudged me in this direction! by @botched.bikes
