The world's deepest beer cellar - was well worth a detour on a wine trip! 150 steps down, about 100 feet underground in the caves of a former basalt quarry: the current 'vintage' (what's the corresponding term in beer lingo?) of Bourbon Barrel Doppelbock beer.

I am a sucker for kitsch and the whimsical, I really am: Here's a couple of impressions from a short recce-trip to Schloss Drachenburg on the Rhein River between Cologne and Bonn. The style of this villa is called 'historicism'... that's when you thermomix Gothic, Rennaissance, Baroque, and add a good dash of your own fancy.

BACK NOW. It's been a bit quiet on our end on this account. August tends to be low for wine tourism in Germany - people seem to be more into beaches than wine and this is my moment for a couple of days off to explore the wines of close and not-so-close neighbours. This time: the wines and the mountains of Slovenia. It's been gorgeous!
Now fully recharged, I am back and ready to take you to the flavours of Rheinhessen, Rheingau, Mosel and all the other beautiful German wine regions! Can't wait!

I didn't mention last week's Mosel winetour. We visited Heymann-Loewenstein at Terrassenmosel and Clemens Busch at Mittelmosel. Stunning estates, stunning wines, gracious hosts. Loved every single second! Here's a couple of impressions.

Hands-on learning from @silvanerlover about the Silvaners and Pinot Noirs in Franken. Fascinating new project: a Pinot vineyard grafted to well-rooted trees of Regent.
Loved every moment of our visit: insights, passion, and great wines... (and the heat of a steep slope vineyard in noon-time sunshine 😂). Leipolds is a winery to keep a keen eye on!
