The PFI Freediver courses we instruct at Bottom Dwellers are a fantastic program, accessible to all levels and abilities from the complete beginner to the early intermediate Freediver.

With “PFI Freediver”, “Basic Freediver” and “Pool-Freediver” all being certifications achievable within this program you can certify at the level that is attainable to you while getting a full scope and thorough level of training.

The PFI Freediver program focuses on safety and technique while applying your academic knowledge learnt to both confined and open-water settings. 10m of depth in Constant Weight and Free Immersion displaying good form and technique along with 1’30” Static Apnea in the confined water are some of the core certifiable tasks the program is centred around. (20m max depth / 4 min max STA)

The Basic Freediver certification which can be awarded within this same program based off performance and achievement allows for a more approachable certification depth of 5m while requiring 1 minute performances in Static Apnea.

The Pool-Freediver certification focuses on the confined water tasks and aspects of the PFI Freediver course and is awarded to those whom complete the confined water requirements but for whichever reason are unable to attain certification requirements of the Open-Water components of the program.

Should any student in our programs be unable to complete the certification level they had hoped for within the course signed up for there is always option to complete this certification within a year of their course date through the option of coaching sessions with us.

This summer we’ve brought back our “Refresher Courses” as an offering. We are currently offering repeat programs to our previous students as “Refresher Courses” to keep current and have access to furthered training. The PFI Refresher course seats are available to past PFI Freediver Students for $400 this 2026 season. This is a great option for those that wish to give the course another go and work towards that certification again or for those that simply want to hone those skills and improve as a Freediver in that PFI Freediver level max scope. #yyj taken in Victoria, British Columbia by @bottomdwellersfreediving

🍟 Our kind of Golden Arches drive-thru looks a little different and alot less golden... 🌊🤿⁠

No cars. No lineups. No fries.⁠
⁠
Just a swim, a little bottom time, and some fresh uni on the way through the arches of Barkley Sound. 😂⁠
⁠
Some of our favourite days in the water have nothing to do with depth, long breath-holds, or chasing anything other than a good time. They're simply about grabbing some dive buddies, heading somewhere remote, and seeing what the coastline has waiting for us.⁠
⁠
Exploring places that are a little harder to get to. Swimming beneath towering rock formations and through sea arches. Dropping down into beautiful cold, BC waters and sustainably harvesting a little food along the way.⁠
⁠
There's something pretty special about being able to explore these wild places as a freediver... and even better when breakfast, lunch, dinner or simply a light snack comes straight from the ocean beneath you.⁠

Beautiful places. Good friends. Fresh uni.⁠
⁠
We'll take this drive-thru any day over those other fishy smelling ones that are more well known...⁠

Earlier this month, we had the opportunity to work through a PFI Instructor Pro Package with these two awesome instructor candidates.

Over the course of 10 big days, Brad @eades__brad and Kellen @oceancowboyoutfitters worked their way through PFI’s Recreational Safety Freediver, Assistant Instructor, and Freediver Instructor frameworks.

Both entered the program as PFI Intermediate Freedivers, and what followed was a challenging and rewarding 10 days of academics, presentations, confined and open-water training, skill development, teaching, evaluations, and plenty of time in the water.

Congrats, gents, on navigating and persevering through such a thorough and demanding program. You both brought a ton of class and skill to the process, along with a natural ability to share knowledge in a way that makes learning fun, approachable, and relatable.

It was a pleasure watching you develop throughout the program, and we’re looking forward to seeing where you both take your skills and how you grow as instructors from here.

A special congratulations as well to my good friend Brad, who successfully earned his PFI Freediver Instructor rating and will be joining the @bottomdwellersfreediving team to support our programs moving forward!

We have some pretty fun things taking shape for Bottom Dwellers in 2027, and I’m sure Brad will be stoked to share a little more about what’s coming when we’re ready to make the announcement. 👀🌊

This week our team spent some time in the water with Chris and Harrison from @bottomdwellersfreediving completing and updating our Free Diving certifications and safety training!

🌊 We love getting outside during the busy season and always recommend our visitors get certified before venturing out into the local waters.
🛟 Living in a remote area with limited resources, encourages our team to be extra prepared and safety oriented.

There are moments in the water when everything else seems to disappear.⁠

Watching two humpback whales court and dance together is one of them.⁠
⁠
Moving around one another with an effortless grace that the mind struggles to comprehend, the rest of the world simply fades away. You float there watching, completely present, and for a little while it feels like time stands still.⁠
⁠
It's hard to put into words what it's like to share the water with these sentient beings. Some encounters are energetic and curious, others are quiet and fleeting—and then there are moments like this that stay with you long after you've left the water.⁠

It won't be long before we're making our way back to Rurutu, French Polynesia, and we couldn't be more excited to get back.⁠
⁠
Without a doubt, we're looking forward to returning to those impossibly blue waters and seeing what awaits us within them this season—but Rurutu has become about so much more than the whales.⁠
⁠
It's the island. The people. The community. The food. The slower pace of life. Waking up each morning with nowhere else we'd rather be and finishing the day sharing stories about what happened in the water.⁠
⁠
We're excited to see familiar faces, reconnect with friends, spend our days in the ocean and, for a little while, slow everything down and decompress into island life.⁠

This past weekend marked a personal milestone for me as I had the opportunity to lead my first @performancefreediving course in Nova Scotia as part of the @bottomdwellersfreediving instructional team.

A huge thank you to @adairc and the Bottom Dwellers crew for the opportunity, to my partner @egerrttmarie for the support and for taking photos and video, and to an awesome group of students—@russell.john.clark @birdsnesthalifax @aidoneus87 @asaucypan @mr_hattacular . 🍂 September is just around the corner... and with it comes one of nature's greatest spectacles.⁠

Every year, millions of Pacific salmon return home.⁠

After years spent roaming the open ocean, they navigate thousands of kilometres back to the very rivers where their journey began. It's a migration driven by instinct, resilience, and an incredible cycle that has shaped our coast for thousands of years.⁠

Beneath the surface, the rivers come alive.⁠
⁠
Schools of salmon move upstream in endless waves. Eagles gather overhead. Bears wait along the riverbanks. Nutrients begin their journey back into the forest, feeding entire ecosystems and reminding us that everything here is connected.⁠

It's one of the most remarkable wildlife experiences on Vancouver Island—and one that surprisingly few people ever witness from beneath the surface.⁠

The best dive buddies are the ones who celebrate your personal bests, remind you to slow down, laugh with you between dives, and always put safety first. They're the people who make every session more enjoyable and every dive a little more memorable.⁠

One of our favourite things about running freediving courses is watching complete strangers become dive partners, training buddies, and lifelong friends. There's something pretty special about bringing together people who share a passion for the ocean, a commitment to learning, and a mindset that always prioritizes safety.⁠

A few moments from our final day of a super fun week supporting @chris.bustad host an @erdidivers Breath Hold Survival program program in Florida at @irsctheriver .

With a mix of foundational knowledge and skills, safety training and a variety of breatholding performances to accomplish in various different scenarios throughout the course, these programs will elevate anyone’s confidence, competence and their overall ability when confronted with breatholding in any scenario.

More to come on these and PFI BHS programs soon. Looking forward to being able to offer them here in Canada.
