It’s well established that strength (especially finger strength) and climbing level are indeed related. Not to say there isn’t more to the overall picture of climbing performance - of course there is! BUT having a good understanding of where you are at physically is an excellent way to inform how you might go about continuing to progress your climbing over the long term.

The fishing rod analogy helps us understand the anatomy of the bones, tendons, and ligaments of our hand.

When a fish pulls on the end of a line, the load is transferred to the rod through circular eyelet hoops. These eyelets are essential in creating this strong and adaptable fishing rod system.

In this analogy, the rod is our bones, the line is our flexor tendons, and the eyelets are our annular pulleys. Our pulleys hold our flexor tendons tight to the bone and turn our fingers into incredibly nimble and strong levers. Unlike fishing though (where the line ‘aka tendon’ typically fails), when it comes to climbing and our fingers, the pulleys are often the first to fail with repetitive use.

The good news is, these injuries are often not severe and can be managed quite successfully. However, there are many variables to consider with our training, climbing, and the possibility of other types of injuries. If you have been having trouble with finger pain, reach out to an experienced climbing injury specialist and start recovering asap!

A pulley is a pulley is NOT a pulley

Wonderful technical knee scum on ‘Idle Hands’ V10. We often think about generating momentum with our lower body, but it’s interesting to look back on this video and see momentum being created with the head and torso when the lower body is locked down.

Lots more V10 videos just released on my YouTube channel. Link in bio
