AGAINST ALL ODDS ⭐️⭐️⭐️✨

Thank you to @bookpublicityservices for sending me this book. I’m very grateful to receive a book for free and to be introduced to a new author 🥰

I have not read the other books in the series, so perhaps I was missing some initial background. However, I still managed to grasp the characters and the different plotlines within this book ✅

There were some very lovable characters: Melody, Lyla, Ying, Frank Fogerty (who makes a brilliant speech on page 22), Judge Parkerton and, of course, Chance Cormac 🤩 I am so pleased Tort was okay in the end 🐾

A brilliant quote from this book: “Greed’s not a money issue. It’s a heart issue.” I think in today’s materialistic world, this is a very poignant message ‼️

This book did, unfortunately, likely provide an insight into ICE facilities and the treatment of immigrants. The scenes depicted in this book reminded me of Richard Madeley’s recent Inside the World’s Mega Prison in Centro de Confinamiento del Terrorismo (CECOT) 🗝️

Unfortunately, the copy I received did have a lot of typos. However, this did not make the book unreadable, and I have been told that these have all been remedied in more recent publications ✨

Furthermore, I was initially confused by the story. The ending of this book is much stronger than the opening. Initially, there were too many characters introduced at once (but perhaps this is due to me not reading the other books in the series) 🫤

Lessons learnt:
* The word cancer comes from the Ancient Greek word for crab (I’m unsure how I hadn’t put that together, considering the star sign for Cancer is a crab) 🦀
* Vigorish is a Yiddish word for profit 📖
* Tovarishch (Товарищ) is the Russian word for “comrade” or “companion” 🇷🇺

Thank you again for sending me this book.

Have you read this one? 📚

QOTD: What’s your star sign? ♋️

THE SUMMER I TURNED PRETTY ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Okay… I know I’m late to the party with this one, but it’s not my classic genre. However, I fancied something a little more lighthearted. No, I haven’t seen the Amazon Prime series either; I’ll add it to the list ✨

I’m just going to get it out of the way… ‘Belly’… what a stupid nickname, and WOW, it annoyed me throughout the entire book. However, I enjoyed pretty much everything else about this book 🤩

My initial thought when reading this book was, “I don’t miss being that age”… which makes me sound really old. But honestly, your teenage years, first kisses, fancying people but not knowing how to act… UGH, horrendous times 🫤

Other thoughts:
* Cam, bless him, he really deserved a callback 😓
* My mother would’ve lost it if, at 16, I came home at 1am from a party 😆 Isabel… you had it EASY 😆
* Ketchup with pasta… really, Taylor?! 🤢
* The mention of Salt Water Taffy reminded me of Phoebe & Ross from *Friends* 🤗

Lesson learnt:
* Seppuku is a Samurai disembowelment ritual (not on theme for this book, but it gets a mention!) 🇯🇵
* Always eat up all the leftovers 🍴
* Tell people how you feel instead of playing games 🗣️

Yes, this was me clinging onto summer and sunny skies. I do have the rest of the books in the series, so I’ll have to pick those up soon 📚

Have you read this series?

QOTD: Did the nickname Belly annoy you too? 😆

TO ALL THE MEN I’VE KILLED BEFORE ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Hello again, Kitty Collins! WHAT A FABULOUS BOOK … but also the end of this series 😢 @but_katy_did_it are you sure it’s the end?

This book, whilst having a humorous murderous twist, does identify many of the issues women face within a patriarchal society (and no, this isn’t a super feminist book!). It simply highlights the viewpoints some men have; seeing women as second-class citizens and believing they have one sole purpose… to please men. It furthermore highlights the unfortunately realistic Hollywood situation, which necessitated the #MeTooMovement. Oh, and a brief note about “those files.” 😖

I absolutely loved getting to know Antoinette; you can certainly tell she’s Kitty’s sister! I’m also in agreement with her: shopping is just awful. Online forever (sorry, I’m literally part of the reason our high streets are dying). 🫣

Kitty was a superwoman as ever. However, fried Brussels sprouts… really? 🤢 It was also so lovely to see a softer side to her by the end of the book. 🥰

Lessons learnt:
* Do your research 🕵🏻‍♀️
* Use credible sources of information ✅
* Never trust an overly ‘nice’ person 👀
* Find My is an incredibly useful app 📍

I loved having @books_my_cats_stole to read this with; both of us trying to hypothesise the ending. Please check out their review on their page ✨ However, I’d like to say I was certainly surprised by some of the twists! 😳

WHAT DOES IT FEEL LIKE? ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨

This is one of the saddest books I’ve ever read, but it’s also such a beautiful exploration of the impact a cancer diagnosis can have on a person and their wider family. 🏥

This book is fiction. However, as Sophie noted, it’s “the most autobiographical work” she’s done. It tells her story prior to her diagnosis, how she fell for her husband, and the impact of her brain surgery. 🧠

I loved the ditching of the bucket list, as she noted that she’d lived a fulfilling life. Therefore, the “normal plus” notion was such a sweet idea. 🥹 It was utterly heartbreaking when, prior to her diagnosis, she said she’d had “too much luck for one person.” 😣

Don’t worry, Eve/Sophie, I had to Google to remind myself what a sextant was too! Hardly an everyday word. 🧭

Sophie Kinsella’s last ever book, published shortly before she died in 2025 from brain cancer. Rest in peace, Sophie. You were a brilliant author. 💙

Lessons:
* Appreciate every moment 🤩
* Glioblastoma is currently an incurable type of cancer 🚑
* New word: ‘Turgid’— describing something that is swollen, distended, or excessively pompous.

Sophie used to donate to The Brain Tumour Charity, and you can too: https://www.thebraintumourcharity.org 💷

THE WIDOW’S HUSBAND’S SECRET ⭐️⭐️⭐️✨

Okay, this book was exactly what I needed! After an awful read, I always rely on a Freida to get me out of a slump 🤩

Due to this being a short story, I felt I couldn’t award it higher than 3.5 stars, but I did enjoy this one a lot 🩵

Great character development, classic Freida twists that remove all the predictions you’d had whilst reading, and, of course, some blood along the way 🩸

Alice, I am totally with you; casserole is one of the worst dishes ever to exist. However, you seriously need to understand proper hair care (FYI, my choice is Redken Amino-Mint) and invest in a kettle. It blows my mind that Americans don’t have kettles?! 🫖

I felt this book gave a nod to The Housemaid with the untouched attic room. However, this so clearly shows the house is not in the UK… we couldn’t just have a room that’s not in use… our houses are much smaller 🫣

This book’s plot line will only make sense to those of a certain age group who will know all about the blue/black dress vs. white/gold dress debate. Also known as Dressgate back in 2015 💙🖤💛🤍

**QOTD:** What dress colour did you see? 👀

If you’ve read this one, let me know your thoughts, or if you’re going to add it to your TBR! 📚

PRAGUE NIGHTS ⭐️⭐️

Unfortunately, this is a negative view of a book I had to drag myself to the end of. It has taken me a month to get through it. However, I pride myself on being honest when it comes to book reviews, and some of you may love this book 💔

I read this book as I set myself a challenge to read books based on places I have been to; Prague was my next book stop 🇨🇿
One of my favourite cities that I’ve visited with my best friend. Therefore, I had high hopes for a book set in such scenic surroundings. Yet, I was greatly disappointed 😔

I will be fair: the writing is beautifully detailed; you can picture every line. Yet, this was its downfall. The descriptions were too detailed, I was bored, and just turning through the pages trying to get to the end 😴

There were many passages of great passion, which juxtaposed the mood of the rest of the book and gave a secondary plot line that, honestly, I was not invested in 🚫

Furthermore, I overall believe my vocabulary is developed, yet I felt I was Googling every chapter. This book cast me back to being at school, with an over-analysis of language, and due to the length of time I spent reading it, all the investment I had was lost.
However, a quote I did enjoy was: “The dead, though voiceless, still demand their rights”, and I think this is very poignant ‼️

The characters, though, some were loveable; Stern himself, I believe, was a good person who was dedicated to his task (except for his rendezvous with Caterina) and an animal lover. But again, this was a downfall… there were too many characters. I got lost as to who was who and their role in the great political sphere. It felt messy.
Furthermore, I am so angry at what happened to poor Plato! 🐈

Please carry on to the comments to see the rest of my review!

Inspired by @elliesbookjournal for this post 💚
What a great time to reevaluate the list for the end of the year!

Now, I’ll be honest… some of these you’ve seen before. I’m sure you’ll all agree that the TBR list adjusts, and you get drawn to different books along the way 🤭

Who knows if life will give me the opportunity to read 9 more books (considering I’ve got 2 books currently on the go!). However, I see no harm in trying 🍀

- Pigeon Blood Red by @ricostays

TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

It’s obvious why this book has sold over 42 million copies worldwide, won multiple book accolades and is read in some schools. It is a piece of genius 👏

Over 10 years ago (now I feel old), I read this book in school and loved it then. Reading it again as an adult, I find its lessons even more powerful, yet also terrifying. It’s frightening to see that, in society, that way of thinking (1930s Deep South) is growing back🙁

Seeing the world through the eyes of a child, we witness the horrific treatment of ethnic minorities, the status of women and classism. It helps prove that any type of prejudice comes from your environment; you are not born with those attitudes. Scout and Jem see the world through their innocent eyes and question how people could be so vulgar towards other human beings. Atticus, you did an excellent job🤩

How insightful of Scout to recognise the hypocrisy of Miss Gates; explaining the horrors of Adolf Hitler and the concept of democracy whilst she clearly held prejudicial beliefs herself. Or, as Scout puts it, “how can you hate Hitler so bad an’ then turn around and be ugly about folks right at home—”. A nine-year-old…👀

It is without a doubt that, despite the forward-thinking mindset of the Finch household (well, not Aunt Alexandra), there was still a long way to go. Attitudes towards women are still a concern, but this is very much of the time period. Scout, wear your overalls with pride and your dresses when it suits you 👗

FOSTER ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I was recommended this book to help get me out of a reading slump. A nice, quick story to give me a sense of immediate achievement. ✅

Due to its length, I struggled to give it more than 4 stars, but the writing is beautiful. It’s so descriptive that I could picture every line of the story; for better or worse 👀

This story is tragic in places, with positive transformations for some characters and difficult parent-child relationships 🔁

I haven’t yet been to Ireland, but perhaps I should visit🇮🇪

Lessons learnt:

- The Gaelic word Leanbh (pronounced “ah lan-iv”) means “my child.” 🇮🇪
- Biological relationships do not guarantee love 💔
- Cleaning a child’s ears is something I don’t remember my own mother ever doing? Was this necessary?👂
- A chosen wallpaper may hide a sorrowful secret 🚂
- Gorey is a town in County Wexford, Ireland 🇮🇪

Let me know if this is on your TBR or if you’ve already read it ✅

HOW TO KILL MEN AND GET AWAY WITH IT ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I promise this book isn’t a feminist rampage as some have tried to make out!! What it does is shine a light on poor male behaviour which unfortunately does exist in the real world (women aren’t perfect either… before people start!) ⚖️

Whilst this book is a story of fiction, it does shed light on the reality that exists in society; ghosting, manipulation, stalking, animal death, sexual assault and r*pe. Therefore, it comes with a trigger warning ⚠️

However, at the same time this book is highly amusing, a luxurious setting of SW3, consensual smutty scenes and Kitty’s dry whit👀

I have already read “I bet you look good in a coffin” so it was a delight to read another of Katy’s books - even if I read them in the wrong order! I can’t wait for the next one “To All the Men I’ve Killed Before” 🤩

Lessons learnt:
- Always report ‘The Creeps’ who DM you ❌
- Never trust minced meat 👀
- Always check you’ve got the right person! 📋
