I may have left my sewing machine in Melbourne, but I brought my embroidery hoop with me to Vancouver!🪡✨

I hadn’t done any embroidery since uni, but it’s been lovely delving back into the medium again. The perfect thing to keep my hands busy whilst I go through my ‘To Watch’ list.

I often struggle to watch movies by myself as I get anxious that I should be doing something more productive (chronic workaholic brain!), but embroidery seems to be hitting the multi-tasking spot. by @bowette.made

Soulville 🔵🟡

Yes, I collect records. And, yes, I collect pieces from the Karen Walker 2011 Soul collection!

I recently snapped up one of the dresses from Depop but unfortunately it was a little snug on my ex-gymnast arms. To avoid ripping it like the Hulk, I removed the sleeves completely. I’m really loving this new style and it will now have a long tear free future.

Back when I was a fashion obsessed tween living in Wellington during the late 00s, I was obsessed with Karen Walker and her twee style.

The 2011 A/W collection was inspired by Northern Soul and was my first introduction to the culture. I remember reading all about it on her blog, but was never able to afford a piece at the time. Many, many years later I snapped up a t-shirt with the soul patch print and then one of the dresses (thank you Recycle Boutique!)

I love wearing these pieces to DJ soul gigs and people always flip for the print 🕺

Stardust ✨✨✨

I picked up this dress in LA years ago, but it was always a little big in the chest so never wore it. I almost gave it away so many times, but I loved the gold and green brocade so much I couldn’t part with it.

I decided to finally take in the waist and the shoulders to better fit. It’s truly divine and has the most radiant sparkle in the light. Can’t wait to wear it to my next Musso’s date 🌹

Burly girl ✨✨✨

One of my favourite parts of performing burlesque was creating all the costumes! This was my 60s bombshell costume that I made out of sparkly baby blue velvet, white lycra and a tonne of rhinestones. I loved debuting this act at Australia’s premiere 1960s revue @discotheque.a.gogo

Hello buttercup🌻

I made this dress over Easter when I had been in the depths of my chronic pain and needed some clothes that weren’t fitted (which is 90% of my wardrobe!)

I used some leftover gingham fabric and based it off a Uniqlo dress I picked up at the opshop that I had been wearing to death. Stylish and comfortable, oh my!

Pink heart apron 🥣💗

My latest sewing project was this frilly heart shaped apron. My boyfriend has an amazing 1950s pink oven that was in need of a perfect kitschy apron to match. Now, I have something extra cute to wear when whipping up apple crumbles and other sweet treats!

Another recent alteration. I’m a big Laura Ashley fan and picked up this 80s number for $4 at a vintage store closing down sale.

I loved the dress but everytime I wore it I felt like a sister wife 🙈 I decided to shorted the sleeves to give it a more contemporary feel. Part of me felt bad, because I know the elbow length sleeve is a signature Laura Ashley style, but I know I’ll get much more wear out of it now and not feel like I look like I spent the morning churning butter!

A recent alteration 🖤

I picked up this 50s black wool top with beaded detail at Vinnie’s for $9. I was on the fence about getting it as I have a similar one and this was a little big, but at that price it would have been a crime to leave behind!

I took in the sides and back to give it a more slimline fit. Now, it’s truly 50s bombshell style and perfect for some wintertime glam! ❄️

Valentine shell bag 🌹

Finally added the clasp to the matching shell bag for Sailorette Kate’s red set. I loved doing the contrasting pearl silk lining on this one. Keen to make another version with contrast stitching.

Baby blue 🩵

A recent alteration. I picked up this cute 60s linen babydoll for really cheap at a vintage store. The hem was down, the bow was falling off and the seams had teared under the arms. With a little TLC, I was able to bring this dress back to its former glory.
