Always amazing having Brian Ravitsky of Brazos Imports in the market. One of the few people who can draw the Valle de Uco subregions from memory or walk you through the entire Criolla family tree without missing a beat.

We also got a surprise visit from Celina of Pielihueso, who stopped by to talk about vineyards so high up they practically kiss the sky. She was in town for a Charli XCX concert, but couldn't resist swinging by to say hello.

Calabria is still little known to Americans outside of its famous little spicy pepper. It doesn’t help that it’s one of the least represented Italian regions on wine shelves, and the wines that do make it over are often from a handful of massive producers.

'A Vita, headed by husband and wife duo Francesco De Franco and Laura Violino, is based in Cirò, Calabria. By comparison, they produce less than 1% of what the region’s largest producer does.

Their wines are honest, made with little to no additions, and exclusively from native Calabrian grapes, varieties selected over thousands of years to thrive in the region’s harsh, arid climate. They’re truly a modern benchmark built on thousands of years of winemaking tradition.

Their new white, Hōra, is made from Greco Bianco and comes from Francesco’s first vineyard planted from scratch in 2017.

If you’re on the hunt for off the beaten path Italian varieties, you’re missing out if you haven’t tried it yet.
