Detour I’ve made many friends from around the world with boxes and booze over the years. It’s always fun to join some of them for a drink. I’m featuring the beautiful “Detour” Box on my blog this week and who better to have created the cocktail toast this time than the fine fellows over at @cocktaildetour They have embraced the theme, making something that starts out familiar, but takes an unexpected turn. Punch has declared a smoking renaissance, with cigarette cocktail garnishes making appearances lately as well. I’m not sure how I feel about that, but am complicit, having made this citrus cigarette for a trendy vintage cocktail recently as well. 100 Year Old Cigar by Maks Pazuniak 1.5 oz aged rum .5 oz Cynar .5 oz Benedictine .25 oz peaty scotch Dash Ango bitters Absinthe rinse Stir w ice and strain into the prepared glass. by @boxesandbooze

Happy Tolkien Reading Day! Sponsored by the international Tolkien Society, this annual holiday celebrates the great author and his beloved stories. I’m celebrating with what I imagine a proper LOTR cocktail would need to have: Scotch, and in particular something with a nice peat smoke to it. It should taste like a warm hobbit hole in the Shire, full of dwarves planning a mountain raid, or perhaps, like the smoky fires of Mount Doom at the end of an epic journey. It might have notes of bittersweet nostalgia for a time long past, from a dream almost forgotten. If you look closely, you might barely recognize the elements of a Negroni, but, you might not. If you need me, I’ll be at the Prancing Pony – cheers. LOTR 1.5 oz Talisker .75 oz Ramazotti .75 oz Lillet dash orange bitters dash cold water Stir together in the glass. Reluctant Saint by Fred Yarm 1 oz mezcal 1 oz Byrrh Grand Quinquina ¾ oz Campari ¼ oz crème de cacao 1 dash absinthe Combine ingredients in a favorite glass and serve at room temperature.
