A now for something COMPLETELY DIFFERENT AND NEW that I've never shared before, my first piece of puzzle woodworking. I worked with a very talented mechanism designer, and all around nice human, named Robert Yarger who came up with the idea of this design, and of course my amazing customer Steve @boxesandbooze .

I will reveal more of how it works in time! This was just a pilot test 😁😎.

I have long been a fan of the eccentric and extravagant Spanish surrealist Salvador Dalí. His brilliance and eccentricity were not limited to the studio. As his lavish 1974 cookbook, Les Dîners de Gala will attest, this consummate showman’s fantastical and over-the-top proclivities spilled over into the kitchen and through the fine art of mixology. Dalí once noted, “Cooking is very close to painting. When I’m busy making a dish, I add a little of this and a little of that. It’s like mixing paints.” Dalí’s personality is summed up rather well in his Casanova cocktail.

 Salvador Dalí’s Casanova Cocktail

The juice of one orange
1 tablespoon bitters (Campari)
1 teaspoon ginger
4 tablespoons brandy
2 tablespoons old brandy (Vielle Cure)
1 pinch cayenne pepper

Some notes from Salvador Dali:

“This is quite appropriate when circumstances such as exhaustion, overwork or simply excess of sobriety are calling for a pick-me-up. Here is a well-tested recipe to fit the bill. Let us stress another advantage of this particular pep-up concoction is that one doesn’t have to make the sour face that usually accompanies the absorption of a remedy. At the bottom of a glass, combine pepper and ginger. Pour the bitters on top, then brandy and ‘Vielle Cure’. Refrigerate or even put in the freezer. Thirty minutes later, remove from the freezer and stir the juice of the orange into the chilled glass. Drink… and wait for the effect. It is rather speedy.”

Steve @boxesandbooze has created a modernized version for today’s palate, or should that be palette?

Casanova

2 oz cognac
1 oz yellow Chartreuse
½ oz Campari
1 oz fresh squeezed orange (I used 2 oz)
2 dashes habanero tincture (I used Scrappy’s Bitters Fire Tincture. Start with 1 dash as it is formidable)
Ginger coin (I used ½ oz Barrow’s Intense Ginger Liqueur in place of the fresh ginger)

Muddle the ginger slice in the bottom of a shaker tin. Add the remaining ingredients and shake with ice until very chilled. Strain into a seductive glass. Garnish with orange peel or melting timepiece.
