The choice of Heather Waters to screen a direct-to-YouTube Israeli propaganda film made by two far right-wing members of the Israeli government with zero filmmaking experience is solid proof that RIFF can no longer be considered an outlet for artistic expression but rather has devolved into a platform for pro-genocidal Israeli rhetoric and hateful ideologies.

Not only are Waters and RIFF screening this film, but they will also be hosting its directors. Both men have directly participated in the genocide of Palestinians; one is an army reserve major who was active in 2023 and 2024 and the other is a member of the ultranationalist “Israel First” party.

Richmond must not accept the screening of hate films or the presence of war criminals in our town. Please continue to boycott RIFF until Heather Waters is no longer at its helm and it ceases to screen hateful propaganda. by @boycottriff

This is a more in-depth discussion of why the film UNRaveling UNRWA is so harmful and why RIFF’s decision to screen it is unacceptable. by @boycottriff

RIFF has tried to reduce the visibility of the Israeli Embassy’s presence and influence at the festival. Heather Waters claims they work with the Israeli Embassy just like they do any other. But that’s not true. As you can see from the red carpet banner in 2023, the Israeli Embassy has historically had a significant role at RIFF. There are no other embassy logos featured there. by @boycottriff

Please endorse our open letter and call to boycott the Richmond International Film Festival! After years of platforming harmful films and views, waving off criticism, and refusing an open dialogue with the community, enough is enough. We call on all people of conscience in the Richmond area to boycott RIFF.

A quote from Axios Richmond and Sabrina Moreno’s article on the boycott of the Byrd and RIFF.
RIFF is not creating opportunities for “dialogue.” There are no panel discussions to challenge and engage around the views of the harmful films they are screening. This is classic PR speak utilized to dismiss criticism. by @boycottriff

Choosing to screen the documentary CasteGate, a film that denies the issue of caste discrimination, is yet another example of the Richmond International Film Festival platforming oppression. by @boycottriff
