I’m stoked for this one to finally get out there! The Rio Fuy is magical, but the put-in below Puma is just mystical, a solid place for some quality self-reflection.

📷: Essentially a self portrait, I set up the shot and gave the camera to Katherine and she nailed it. It immediately became one of the favorite photos of me of all time. I was truly doing some self reflection and this photo wholly captures the spirit of that internal moment - also the reason I kayak.

I can’t wait to stair down the lip of this one again. It’s still one of my favorite memories. From a shady eddy under icy trees, in the spray from a drop just above, things open up as you slide off the 15 footer and around the undercut wall. A giant coliseum of stone walls, mist, and rainbows awaits below the 80 foot lip of rolling, churning whitewater. As your perspective widens and time slows, there is no turning back.

The river has a way of cleansing away the small parts of ourselves that we often use to feel bigger. Your ego won’t last here.
.
In this church your prejudice doesn’t matter and neither does your privilege, because they are small, weak parts of you that can only fall away. They are meaningless here and won’t last, if you do.
.
Experiences on the edge make us better. They force us to grow and to be uncomfortable. Discomfort and inconvenience are synonymous with growth. In every aspect of this journey, we are together and we have to do better.
.
Let the small parts of yourself fall away and float on like the mist into rainbows of promise. Be grateful for the uncomfortable moments, the difficult ones, and the hard. Those are the ones that make us great.

1. Preload your stroke to build power and speed.
2. Lean away from the obstacle to direct that energy upward and create lift.
3. Crunch forward and change edges to break free, shifting to the opposite front quadrant from how you launched.
4. Always look where you want to go, square your shoulders to your goal, and follow through with a stroke to direct your landing momentum.

How to Fade Boof in 15 seconds? Challenge accepted.
Deep fades and water boofs require a precise lean to keep your paddle in the faster water while you load your blade for launch. With a well-timed stroke that pulls your hips off the highest point of the obstacle, your crunch compounds the lift and a quadrant shift (from back right to front left in this case), allows you to soar and completely break free. Plant your next stroke in and hold it as you land to control your momentum as you accelerate away.

It may be the best big waterfall practice spot in the world… short and aerated enough for a soft boof, tall enough to want to pencil, and clean enough to safely collect the pieces. Add a dose of lap-ability and you have the ultimate classroom for building waterfall skills in Chile with @puconkayakretreat

Holi, a celebration of light conquering darkness, love, and unity. With flights cancelled and scarce, we embraced the moment anyway, one that was met with a full lunar eclipse and doubled celebration. There’s something both trying and powerful about celebrating love, peace, and unity in such close proximity to the fresh eruption of a very old war. Putting my money where my mouth is. I wholeheartedly believe in coaching and video review- so much so, that I flew to the other side of the world and paid for it myself with @renegadesurf Learning to surf when you live in a landlocked state, like Tennessee, can seem daunting at the least, but seeing myself on a screen with a coach at hand to talk through my body mechanics and decisions is a complete game changer. It also helps to have a quality coach to slow me down so I don’t forget to master the basics.

The good news is with kayaking, I only need to see your POV for river running and progression, so no film crew necessary. But when people ask me if I really think video review helps, I’m happy to share my own progression in surfing.

If you’re interested in getting started but unsure where to start or if it’s even feasible. just send me a message or email through my website, and I’ll get back to you as soon as I’m able. If you’re interested in progressing through your intermediate phase in surfing, I highly recommend Renegade Surf. The guys are phenomenal.
