The Steps I take to overcome fear:
1. accept your fear instead of denying it because denial makes it bigger.
2. objectively assess the situation and your skills to know if your fear is warranted
3. know why you do it and focus on your joy, connection, and reason for being there
4. broaden your perspective and situational awareness to expand your way out of the tunnel vision.
5. Breathe and trust yourself.

You can safely desensitize yourself by repeating a rapid or situation that is scary but still within your skillset.

The Stomp lowers your bow, softens the landing, and transfers your vertical momentum into forward momentum away from the drop. But it can be dangerous to learn and risky to do if it isn’t well-timed or done properly.

The secret is to stay forward over your boat while keeping your paddle in front of you and your elbows high. Press down with your heals while unhinging your hips to lower your bow, but then crunch forward again on landing.

If you do it right, the energy from your landing will be transferred from your bow to your stern without going up your spine and while projecting you forward.

If you want to get good at catching eddies, you have to get good at managing your momentum, reading the river, and using the water to take you where you want to go.

Choose lines that allow you to build lateral momentum at the eddy, rather than picking lines that run directly beside it.

Use river features like micro-eddies, hesitations, backflow behind holes, and small waves to guide your boat effortlessly into the eddy you want to catch.

And if you really want to get good at catching eddies. pick a rapid and find as many as you can. Tackle small ones, tiny ones, hard ones, and seemingly impossible ones. You’ll be amazed what kind of eddies you catch and how easy it can actually be.

Holes are one of the most intimidating features a progressing kayaker will ever face, until you understand them and learn how to work with them for fun. In this series, I’ll break it down and teach you how to spot a fun one and make the most of it, and how to know which ones to avoid.

Whitewater seems so chaotic and random when you’re first learning and don’t understand it, but every little splash has a predictable reason. In River Reading Part 2, we’ll look at river hydrodynamics and apply it to the features you’ll find on the river to demystify the noise and help you pick a line you’re proud of.
