Thinking Back, Making Forward:
Artistic Research in Practice, edited by Brad Haylock, Jessica Wilkinson, and Charles Anderson In the last three decades, creative practice disciplines, such as art, design, architecture, creative writing, fashion, and others, have undergone a ā€šresearch turnā€˜, strongly stimulated by doctoral programmes to deepen artistsā€˜ reflections on the roots, relevance and urgencies of their work.
There are many reasons why an individual practitioner might decide to undertake a PhD: a desire to uplift one’s practice, to contribute to the intellectual artistic climate, to teach, to pursue an academic career, or some combination of these, or other reasons.

For this book we issued an open call to ask artists how PhD research has influenced their making and thinking. Our questions were: What are the impacts, urgency, and significance of the PhD for creative practitioners? How are these understood, captured, communicated?
How did it change your practice? We even asked: should creative practitioners undertake a PhD in the first place?

Through its thirty contributions Thinking Back, Making Forward tackles these questions in an open way, to
acknowledge, equally, the advantages and disadvantages of the creep of the PhD into artistic practice. At the same time, this book shows a wide range of possibilities of what research in artistic practice can entail.

Super pleased to announce this!

We are calling for contributions to an edited book exploring the impacts of artistic research and practice-based research PhDs upon creative practice. This book will be edited by myself and Jessica Wilkinson and Charles Anderson of RMIT University, and published by @valiz_books_projects.

In the last three decades, creative practice disciplines, such as art, design, architecture, creative writing, fashion, and others, have undergone a ā€˜research turn’ through their integration into the academy. The rise of artistic research or practice-based research is subtly transforming these disciplines. The integration of research into practice, however, has not always been smooth, and the transformations not unequivocally positive.

Zachovejte Bienále Brno! / Save the Brno Biennial!

Sign the petition here: https://chng.it/QkPGswzyjy

The Moravian Gallery in Brno, the organiser of the Brno Biennial, announced on 24 April 2022 that it had ā€œdecided to abandon the regular exhibitions of the Brno Biennial and replace them with a sustainable permanent digital platform.ā€

Established in 1963, the International Biennial of Graphic Design Brno is one of the oldest and most important events in the field of visual communication worldwide. For almost six decades, the Brno Biennial has provided a major international platform for exhibitions, discussions, and relevant accompanying programmes on the dynamically expanding field of graphic design, an integral part of visual culture. In addition, the Biennial gave rise to an extensive collection of graphic design, a public archive systematically broadened with each edition. Designers from all over the world have repeatedly participated in each edition. At the same time, the Biennial is regularly attended by thousands, with many visitors coming to Brno from abroad. The Brno Biennial plays an invaluable role in education, as it influenced and formed whole generations of graphic designers who participated in its editions.

Graphic design is an integral part of the environment we live in. The Brno Biennial is the only cultural event of this kind, scope, and tradition worldwide. It facilitates a discourse in the field of visual culture accessible to everyone. The exclusively digital (and so far unspecified) platform that the Moravian Gallery attributes to the future of the Biennial cannot replace these in-person interactions and experiences.

Super pleased to have co-edited this new book ā€œArt Writing in Crisisā€ with @__lifewithbooks !! Published by @sternbergpress and available now in EU/UK and online, US release through @mitpress and AU through @penguinrandomhouse in December.

About the book:

Fires burn around the world. Systemic discrimination persists, precarity is increasing, and the modern democratic project faces challenges from all sides. Art writing helps us to understand art which in turn helps us to understand such crises. But art writing itself is in crisis.

This volume presents contributions from a broad range of authors who address the social and political dimensions of art and art writing in the contemporary context, and the ways in which new writing and publishing practices promote critical engagement among readerships as never before.

Huge thanks to all of our fantastic contributors! TAYLOR RENEE ALDRIDGE & JESSICA LYNNE, KALIA BROOKS NELSON, MADDEE CLARK, JUSTIN CLEMENS, BEN ELTHAM, FAYEN D’EVIE & LIZZIE BOON, DAN FOX, MARIA FUSCO, SARAH GORY, BORIS GROYS, PAUL JAMES & BRAD HAYLOCK, FLAVIN JUDD, SARA KAAMAN, JESSICA GYSEL & KATJA MATER, BELLA LI & JUSTIN CLEMENS, FREEK LOMME, RACHEL MARSDEN, NIKOS PAPASTERGIADIS & HOU HANRU, MEGAN PATTY, BARRY SCHWABSKY, ANNA-SOPHIE SPRINGER & CALEB WALDORF, and ASTRID VORSTERMANS

Devastated to hear the news of the sudden passing of friend and colleague Damiano Bertoli. My thoughts are with his family and loved ones and his many other dear friends in the Melbourne art world and beyond. Damiano, I’ll cherish the memories of our impassioned conversations about books, fonts, whiskies, and everything else besides.

A few pre-internet years ago, a young graphic designer had an argument with his Finnish grandfather, a retired athlete. The designer asked about the 1940 Helsinki Olympics. His grandfather said they didn’t exist. The young designer thought his grandfather had gone senile — he was adamant that the event had happened. The stand-off was a dead end, because both were sure of their histories. But the young designer had relied on a poster he once saw for the 1940 Olympics, in an exhibition not unlike this one. A simple work of graphic design had created a parallel reality. Featuring a wide range of historical and contemporary artefacts, including fictions, fakes and unpublished works, this exhibition examines the sometimes slippery line between reality and fiction. //// Please come see ā€œWhich Mirror Do You Want To Lick?ā€ at At The Above, Level 1 / 198 Gertrude st, Fitzroy VIC. //// Curated by Åbäke (UK), Sofie Dederen (BE), Radim Peško (CZ/UK) & me. //// Following consultation between the curatorial team and our venue partner, we will not proceed with the opening event for the ā€˜Which Mirror Do You Want To Lick?’ exhibition this evening, advertised elsewhere, and the last day for viewing will be Saturday 21 March — these difficult but necessary decisions have been taken amid the rapidly evolving COVID-19 situation. The exhibition will be open for viewing, 18–21 March, 10am–6pm daily, and I very much hope that you have an opportunity to see this great show. //// This event is part of Melbourne Design Week 2020, an initiative of the Victorian Government in collaboration with the NGV. #MelbourneDesignWeek #NGV @NGVMelbourne taken in At the above by @bradhaylock
