It’s an anarchic object made at some risk for a big factory like die Keure. Many decisions taken and improvised during production. It doesn’t look like it did on screen and that’s the point. Thanks a million to the presale buyers for making it possible. Presale is sold out and as of today the website is updated with some new images and ready for sales of the main edition. Problem formulation is the problem. Brad Haylock says that graphic design, like other kinds of design, is often concerend with problem solving. In his essay, he argues that problem formulation, also known as problem definition, is a virtually essential part of the design process, and therefore important in graphic design education and practice. Brad also mentions Horst Rittel’s proposed concept of “wicked” problems (Horst Rittel taught at the Hochschule für Gestaltung Ulm and the University of California). Luke Wood’s and Brad Haylock’s book “One and Many Mirrors” is absolutely worth reading, offering an overview of the field of contemporary graphic design education. I have drawn inspiration from the book for my own book, Teaching Graphic Design (birkhauser.com). We are excited to present “Design Agency1: Now, Always!”, a forum where leaders in socially engaged design discuss the connections of communication design with community, culture, and Country. What are the local and national narratives of design in Australia? What are our responsibilities to place? Moderated by Bec Nally (@rmituniversity) and Emrhan Sultan (@solidlines.agency), the first Design Agency event navigates old and new cultural paradigms, political agitation, and strategies for future generations. @jeswri is a multifaceted Gadigal artist of the Eora Nation. Born and raised in Sydney, he now lives in Naarm. He is known for his large-scale street art and exciting brand collaborations with Converse, Adidas, and VividSydney. Sahra Martin is a designer and archivist based in Naarm working across publishing, visual communication, research, and collection management. Her interdisciplinary practice @everywhere_nowhere_ is focussed on supporting the communication and preservation of marginalised arts and cultural practices and narratives. Dr. Natalia Radywyl is a researcher, designer, and educator specialising in design research, service design, and systemic design. Over the past 15 years, her work has spanned sectors and industries, ranging from Fortune 500 to the community sector. She is currently Head of Research and Capability at @todaydes. Kate Bensen is a writer, designer, and photographer with a passion for sharing narratives emerging from the not-for-profit space. Currently the Storyteller at @todaydes, Kate has worked with federal government, not-for-profits, and First Nations organisations to shape content and communication strategies. Hello! I haven’t posted any design things in a little while but this is a good reason to end the hiatus. I’m so grateful to have my graphic design work included in Melbourne Now 2023 at the NGV as part of ‘Babel Bookcase’, curated by @bradhaylock which offers an insight into the world of graphic and communication design in/from Naarm over the past decade. A million thank you’s to Brad for including my work in this beautiful exhibition amongst a community of designers and studios I have long admired for their craft. In very good company alongside @studio_round @afriendofminedesignstudio @alter @u____p @studiovinciguerra @w__h____ @everywhere_nowhere_ @jeswri @matterofsorts The exhibition is on view until 20th August. Didn’t manage to get the greatest pics on my average iPhone so best you go visit it in person!
