Artist-in-residence Bramble Lee Pryde (brambleleepryde.com)

Bramble Lee Pryde (she/they) is an interdisciplinary artist whose practice exists at the intersection of installation, sculpture, ceramics, textiles, and adornment (under the moniker Subject Object). Their work teeters at the precipice of fine art and high craft, leveraging dry, sardonic wit to make space for the things we are usually expected to quietly tolerate. Their work unfolds in immersive iterations, offering multiple entry points into societal unease, dissonance, and lived experience.

Pryde’s practice shifted toward long-form, iterative bodies of work following a 2023 residency at the Berlin Art Institute. Their work is shaped by grief and loss, translated into tangible forms and environments that can be held, entered, and confronted. Their ongoing body of work, The Existential Dreadlings, personifies contemporary anxieties through strange companions that serve as witnesses, extending across sculpture and participatory formats, including an art deck, zines, and collectible ephemera.

Selected projects include the solo exhibition I’m Fine, It’s Fine Art (The Underground Gallery, 2024) and public commissions, including Parasocial Paradox (Contemporary Calgary, 2024) and EPHEMERA for Chinook Blast (2023). Pryde’s curatorial practice spans exhibitions and group shows, sustained artist support, and the founding and direction of artist-led spaces and public-facing programming, including White Rabbit Atelier (2019 – 2024). taken in Sparrow Artspace by @bramble.lee.pryde

Artist in residence Steve Pi.
Steve Pi is an art director, creative collaborator, and member of The Dooms. His practice spans fabrication, installation, sound, visual direction, and creative problem-solving, with a particular focus on translating conceptual work into physical and immersive experiences. He has contributed to every public art project undertaken by Bramble Lee Pryde, supporting fabrication, technical development, material innovation, exhibition design, art direction, and curation. As part of The Dooms, Pi contributes original music, guitar, field recordings, and experimental sound, while also helping shape the spatial and immersive qualities of installations and exhibitions. Moving between conceptual development and practical construction, his collaboration is integral to both how the work is built and how it is experienced. taken in Sparrow Artspace by @bramble.lee.pryde

THE HANG • 02

THE WALLS HAVE DEVELOPED CONDITIONS.

Week two of Strange Companions: Still Here.

The Conditions have made their way onto the walls. Large-scale versions of the oracle cards, suspended throughout the gallery and doing a reasonably convincing impression of an exhibition.

The visual library is spreading, the windows have acquired their own peculiar inhabitants, and the space is slowly becoming less of a construction site and more of a place to spend time.

This week we held our first workshop, Make a Coping Altar. We came together to make small objects for whatever they needed help holding. There was no requirement to disclose what that was, explain its origins, or demonstrate any measurable progress toward overcoming it.

The exhibition is still being assembled (this week it will be complete), but the space is already doing something I hoped it might: Making room for people to simply be there.

Strange Companions: Bramble Lee Pryde & Steve Pi
October 2026, Open to the Public Thurs-Sat 11am-6pm (artists in attendance)
Strange Companions is a collaborative residency by Bramble Lee Pryde and Steve Pi, working together as The Dooms. Expanding from Pryde’s long-term project The Existential Dreadlings, the residency brings sculpture, sound, text, participatory tools, and installation together to examine how people use objects, rituals, systems, and stories to live alongside uncertainty. Rather than offering resolution, the work considers companionship, attention, and what it means to remain present with experiences that cannot be neatly solved.
Throughout the residency, Pryde and Pi will transform the gallery into an evolving environment shaped through sculptural figures, constructed spaces, field recordings, composed sound, an artist deck, and its accompanying field guide. The sculptural, sound, and installation elements will develop in close response to one another, allowing the exhibition to change through experimentation, construction, and live use of the space.

Create a Coping Altar is a reflective, hands-on workshop about creating a small personal structure for attention, grounding, and meaning. Through an introduction to the ideas behind Strange Companions, artist Bramble Lee Pryde will explore how people use objects, rituals, and symbolic arrangements to live alongside uncertainty. Participants will then be guided through a private exercise to consider what they want their altar to hold, acknowledge, remember, or make space for. After an introduction to the materials and possible approaches, participants will create a small altar using objects, images, textures, words, and constructed elements. The altar is not intended as a cure or solution, but as a personal site of recognition: a place to return to, pause, or hold what cannot be neatly resolved. Participants will leave with a completed altar and a practical framework for using symbolic objects and small rituals in their own lives (SOLD OUT).

Create Your Personal Dreadling is a hands-on workshop exploring how imagined creatures can give form to the anxieties, uncertainties, and coping strategies taken in Sparrow Artspace by @bramble.lee.pryde

THE BUILD • 01

THE ORDER HAVE ENTERED THE SPACE.

Strange Companions arrived at Sparrow deliberately unfinished.

The original plan was to build the exhibition elsewhere and bring it into the gallery more or less resolved. Once the work began to evolve, that stopped making sense.

So we changed the plan.

The residency is now the build. Work enters the space, encounters what is already there, gets moved, reconsidered, added to or occasionally abandoned entirely.

These are the four Orders. They will structure the installation and eventually hold their associated Dreadlings. Seeing them together in the room has already changed how the rest of the exhibition will respond.

Uncertainty is not only the subject of Strange Companions. I guess it also wanted to influence the installation.

I’m not a writer. I still speak in 90’s slang at an alarming frequency that is becoming increasingly off putting for someone my age.

I never intended to become a writer. Yet writing entered my visual practice because the work needed a language. So I followed it far enough to accidentally write a book.

Here we are. The printed proof in my hand. And I am experiencing a radical amount of feels.

More details soon. In the meantime thank you to @calgaryartsdev for funding this project and @__jamesey__ for the endless editing and support. taken in Calgary, Alberta by @bramble.lee.pryde

Dispatches 003 is going out tonight, DM if you’d like to be added. So grateful for the response, sending work into the ether never stops being emotionally unnerving lol. Looking forward to seeing peoples actual faces in October during our residency at Sparrow Art Space.

Strange Companions: still here.

How 5 little porcelain creatures made in 2022, grew into an interconnected world of sculpture, jewellery, sound, performance, divination, publishing and a hand-built visual language. All developed through public encounters and testing.
