THE WALLS HAVE DEVELOPED CONDITIONS.

Week two of Strange Companions: Still Here.

The Conditions have made their way onto the walls. Large-scale versions of the oracle cards, suspended throughout the gallery and doing a reasonably convincing impression of an exhibition.

The visual library is spreading, the windows have acquired their own peculiar inhabitants, and the space is slowly becoming less of a construction site and more of a place to spend time.

This week we held our first workshop, Make a Coping Altar. We came together to make small objects for whatever they needed help holding. There was no requirement to disclose what that was, explain its origins, or demonstrate any measurable progress toward overcoming it.

The exhibition is still being assembled (this week it will be complete), but the space is already doing something I hoped it might: Making room for people to simply be there.

I’m not a writer. I still speak in 90’s slang at an alarming frequency that is becoming increasingly off putting for someone my age.

I never intended to become a writer. Yet writing entered my visual practice because the work needed a language. So I followed it far enough to accidentally write a book.

Here we are. The printed proof in my hand. And I am experiencing a radical amount of feels.

More details soon. In the meantime thank you to @calgaryartsdev for funding this project and @__jamesey__ for the endless editing and support.

EYEcon is on view at the Alberta Craft Discovery Gallery in Edmonton through June 5, 2026. Thank you to Jennea Frischke and Kristy Carlyle for the invitation to participate.

For this series my work considers what it means to be seen while maintaining the appearance of composure. The tear jars reference the widely circulated idea of Victorian vessels used to collect grief and objects people wanted so badly to exist that they became accepted as fact.

That desire is telling. It suggests a longstanding impulse to measure, contain, and aestheticize emotion for the benefit of an external gaze.

Today, the expectation remains. Distress is permitted, but only in controlled doses. Legible, but not excessive. Visible, but still socially appropriate.

The jars do not hold grief. They hold the pressure to manage it.

I don't know if the tarot ladies on TikTok also haunt *your* feed, but they are always on mine—which is kind of interesting to see, because this is the second time in recent memory that tarot has had a moment. (If you are not a millennial girly, there was a moment circa 2016 when it was everywhere, from women's magazine think pieces to jewellery collections.) But, as Calgary artist @bramble.lee.pryde reminded me recently, it was also big in the '90s. In fact, tarot's popularity has always ebbed and flowed, and why it's big now can probably tell us a lot about how people are feeling about the state of the world.

Bramble and I were actually chatting about her new collection of fine-art jewellery, The Existential Dreadlings. She uses tarot as a creative tool, so it was fascinating to hear how it helped her develop this collection. But, our conversation also expanded into a bigger-picture discussion of tarot, why it's so popular and the difference between the tarot trend of 2016 versus now.

Beyond honoured to be included in this month’s issue of ELLE @ellecanada, especially to be recognized for bringing art and more contextual ideas to a wider audience through jewellery. Thank you for the interview @ericangao, it was a pleasure to talk about making room for more voices in an industry going through some wild times.
