Justice for Jeremy Berman Advocates for California Probate Reform ⚖️

A KING 5 investigation exposed how unrelated third parties took control of more than 200 estates in Washington. Lawmakers responded with HB 2445, “Ending probates for profit.”

California has a different vulnerability with similarly serious consequences. A creditor can qualify as an “interested person” and petition to open probate, even if they are not an heir, beneficiary, or the executor named in the will.

Justice for Jeremy Berman is proposing Jeremy Michael Berman’s Law to:

1️⃣ Require proof of a small estate’s actual assets and value before it can be subjected to full probate.

2️⃣ Require purported creditors to prove their claims before initiating formal probate. An allegation alone should not be enough. The debt and amount claimed should be supported by clear, verifiable evidence.

3️⃣ Require courts to check whether a will has already been lodged before allowing an estate to proceed as though no will exists. If a will is already in the court’s records, it should be linked to the probate case before the case moves forward.

4️⃣ Protect the executor and beneficiaries chosen by the deceased. A third party should not be able to displace the named executor based solely on an allegation, financial claim, or preference for someone else.

Washington showed that lawmakers can close probate loopholes. California should act next.

Today I learned that Peter Katsis passed away, and it brought back a lot of memories from my time working with the Backstreet Boys.

Peter was one of those people who had a presence the moment he walked into a room. He was sharp, driven, and always seemed to know exactly what needed to happen to move things forward. He was a force in this industry, but what always stood out to me was that he genuinely cared, not just about the artists he represented, but about the people behind the scenes who helped make everything happen.

The music industry has lost someone who made a lasting impact on so many careers and lives. I’m grateful our paths crossed and that I had the opportunity to see firsthand the kind of leader he was.
My thoughts are with his family, friends, and everyone who had the privilege of working alongside him.

Rest easy, Peter. Thank you for everything you gave to this industry. #peterkatsis #rip by @brandi_booth

Today was exactly what my heart needed. 🩷

Brixton and I started the day at a vintage pop-up on The Hill where we got matching forever bracelets. I love that we’ll always have that little reminder of today.
After that, we headed over to Antagonist Cafe in Soulard (which used to be an old jailhouse) and spent the afternoon walking around, admiring all the beautiful old homes with our drinks in hand.
We could wander neighborhoods like that for hours.
More than anything, I just love spending time with my girl. Watching her grow into such an incredible person is one of the greatest gifts of my life. These simple days together are the ones I’ll always cherish.
Just a beautiful day with my favorite person.
I’m so grateful for these little moments. They remind me that even in the middle of difficult seasons, there’s still so much joy to be found. ❤️

When Brixton finished 6th grade in late May, we made a pretty big decision... we decided to homeschool.
Most kids count down the days until summer break. Brixton? She asked if she could start school again just a couple of days after getting out. I definitely wasn’t expecting that, but I wasn’t going to stand in the way of that kind of excitement for learning.
Right now she’s taking Language Arts, Reading Comprehension, Math, Astronomy, Life Science, U.S. History (Exploration through 1877), Music Reading, Art Around the World, Beginning American Sign Language, Beginning German Vocabulary, Intro to Typing, Computer Skills, and Career Exploration.
If she keeps working at the pace she is now, she’ll be moving into 8th grade by end of January 2027.
She’s currently earning all A’s and one B+ in Math, and I honestly couldn’t be more proud.
What amazes me even more is that school isn’t the only thing she’s passionate about. Every single day she’s creating something. Painting, drawing, digital art, claymation, clothing design... her imagination never stops. And I can’t leave out her love of cooking and baking. Every meal or dessert she makes is chef’s kiss. 👩‍🍳😘
Watching her grow into such a kind, creative, intelligent, and hardworking young lady has been one of the greatest blessings of my life.
I know Jeremy would be incredibly proud of the beautiful person she has become.
Now... if I could just convince her that cleaning her room is just as important as all those straight A’s... we’d really have it all figured out. 😂❤️🌈

Jeremy entrusted me with important duties. He appointed me as his Durable Power of Attorney and selected me as his estate representative. Soon after Jeremy’s passing, I discovered that some of his digital accounts were no longer accessible to me—despite being provided with credentials during his lifetime.

Because related legal matters remain ongoing, I cannot discuss every aspect of those events. What I can say is that the experience fundamentally changed how I think about safeguarding digital assets and protecting privacy after death, especially because Jeremy was such a deeply private person.

Justice for Jeremy Berman was created to tell Jeremy’s story. As his chosen representative, what unfolded before and after Jeremy died is one of the hardest stories I’ve ever had to tell.

Jeremy’s cancer diagnosis meant preparing for the heartbreaking possibility that he would no longer be with us. To establish his final wishes, Jeremy executed estate planning documents.

After Jeremy died, things did not go according to plan.

Throughout the challenges that followed, I had the responsibility of defending Jeremy’s testamentary rights while remaining strong for our daughter, Brixton Berman.

💥Today I went to the post office for the first time in months to buy stamps.

The woman behind the counter asked me which design I wanted. As I looked over the options, one immediately caught my eye: a Bruce Lee stamp.

I just stood there for a second and then yelled to Brixton, “IT’S A SIGN!” ❤️

Bruce Lee was one of Jeremy’s heroes. Maybe some people don’t believe in signs, but I do. I believe the people we love find little ways to remind us they’re still with us, especially when we need encouragement the most.

What made it even more perfect was the image on the stamp, Bruce Lee performing his iconic side kick.

Jeremy used to tell me all the time, “Go kick their ass, B. I know you can do it.”

He was always my biggest cheerleader. No matter what was happening, no matter how difficult things became, he believed in me. When I doubted myself, he never did.

One thing he used to say that I’ll never forget was:
“If there’s one person who can adapt to anything, it’s you, babe.”

So today, seeing that stamp felt like one of those little reminders from him. A nudge. A hello. A message to keep going.

One of Bruce Lee’s most famous quotes feels especially fitting today:
“Empty your mind, be formless, shapeless—like water. Now, you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle, it becomes the bottle. You put it in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Now, water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend.”

Life keeps changing. We adapt. We flow. We keep moving forward. Thank you for still having my back, even from the other side.

I miss you so much, JB. ❤️

✨Lately, I’ve been realizing how much forward movement helps me. It’s always been something I need. But sometimes life puts you in those kind of moments and I guess like all things there is something to learn from it.

Staying busy, building a future, working toward goals, and feeling like life is moving again has honestly been really good for my soul.

For the first time in a long time, I’v been feeling lighter. Happier. More excited about what’s ahead instead of weighed down by everything behind me.

It also makes such a difference being surrounded by successful, positive, smart, loving people who genuinely care about me and my daughter. I truly love my job, and my bosses have become like family to us. Being in an environment that feels supportive, encouraging, loving and full of good energy has reminded me what peace and stability can feel like again.

Still healing. Still growing. But finally feeling hopeful and excited for what’s next 🖤✨”
