Practical tools to build a grounded spiritual life
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Re-introducing myself:  I've worked with celebrities and sat in jail with those society has thrown away.

I’m a meditation and mindfulness teacher and lover of souls.

I've worked with NFL and NBA coaches, Disney executives, and I teach at Yale Divinity School.

I also host Yale's podcast of spirituality, healing, and leadership called The Leader's Way. Check it out @theleadersway.podcast

💜 What I most want you to know is that I care. 💜

My most cherished work is the quiet, sacred work of walking with people one on one through life’s heart-stretching moments…

I cherish listening deeply and sitting with the biggest questions we can ask together about life and love, suffering and relief.

For nearly 20 years I've led retreats (probably over 1000).

in daily life, when I am not on Instagram cheering on other incredible humans, healers, and wise souls,

you'll find me in my New England cottage garden,

crocheting,

playing classical guitar,

or snuggling my three Siberian forest cats.

I'm a proud dad to Sophia and Ellie, my daughters whose wit and wisdom I cherish.

I have the most amazing partner by my side, Susan, who is an author, researcher, teacher, and scholar at Yale School of Public Health….and who tolerates my inner golden retriever.

I'm so thankful you're here, and I'd love to get to know you too!

Every truly liberating spiritual tradition has, at its dynamic center, a similar core message.

✨ The distance you feel between yourself and the sacred is not a fact. ✨

It is a story, a lie that can be unlearned.

This reality has passed down through mystics, saints, wise elders, and every ordinary person who ever sat in stillness long enough to remember what was always true.

Spirituality is less a journey toward God than it is

the slow and beautiful realization that

God is already breathing in you right now. 💜 by @brandon.nappi

When politics are weaponized to overwhelm and distract, our anger, outrage, and grief are real.

I would rather be tender, heartbroken, and judged as naive, than be jaded, cynical, and coldly detached from the world's anguish.

Powers attempt to colonize our hearts with fear.

In response, we refuse to let our love become smaller. Our superpower is loving bigger, wider, and more tenaciously.

I vow to care, to pay attention, to stay engaged, to resist brutality, to feel.

I want my life to be known by the extravagance of my love, the courage of my convictions, and my unshakeable belief in the sacredness of our shared humanity.

In a world that profits from our disconnection, choosing love is a radical act. In a culture that celebrates numbness, feeling deeply is rebellion. In systems designed to divide us, recognizing our shared humanity is revolutionary.

Your tender heart isn't weakness—it's your greatest strength. Don't let them convince you otherwise. by @brandon.nappi

I’ve been thinking about Helen Keller these days.

I love her wisdom when she said:

I long to accomplish a

great and noble task,

but it is my chief duty

to accomplish small tasks

as if they were great and noble.

The smallest tasks call for the greatest love.

I think of the way my grandmother made soup for me with such tender loving care when I was a child.

How I wish I could be in her kitchen again even for an hour!

We can become so obsessed with the grand tasks that we forget that it’s the little moments infused with compassion and love which are the building blocks of life. by @brandon.nappi

All four of my great grandparents immigrated from Italy. Columbus did too.

Every spiritual tradition I know asks the same thing:

see the humanity in every person.

But Columbus did not.

He tortured and enslaved the Taíno people.

He pioneered the slave trade in the Americas.

His arrival triggered a collapse that wiped out up to 95% of the indigenous population.

He was arrested in 1500 for his cruelty.

The spiritual life requires us to tell the truth.

I'll honor my Italian ancestors, but I won't honor him.

I can't imagine the courage, trust, and prayers of my great grandparents that made their passage from Italy to New York possible.

The amount of work it took to learn a new language, establish themselves, and face discrimination was incalculable.

I am so thankful for the determination and hope that they passed along to me.

This annual custom of celebrating Columbus is the opposite of what they lived and worked for.

Being proud of where you come from should never mean looking away from the truth of what was done in your name.

Real heritage is strong enough to hold both grief and gratitude at the same time. by @brandon.nappi

Spirituality is not about you getting into heaven.

It's about God getting heaven into you.

Your Source is always available.

The Creator is breathing into the created at all times.

Heaven is already mysteriously within you, but we forget.

Our work is to remember that there is

no separation.

Our trauma conspires with the greed, comparison, and dehumanization of the world to

keep us sleepwalking through life,

forgetting who we are: vessels of Spirit.

So we practice waking up and paying attention and staying connected to ourselves and others

in a zillion different ways. by @brandon.nappi

Can we please stop gendering all of life's activities?

I'm a straight cisgender guy.

I knit and crochet.

I cry easily. I’m highly sensitive.

I do much of the cooking, I love flowers, and I love a good rom com.

I also love football and gangster movies.

These arbitrary rules about what men and women should and shouldn't do?

We need to discard them immediately.

They were never based on anything real to begin with...

Let's be honest:

And usually if you look underneath, the roles are usually about perpetuating unequal power, male dominance, and the subjugation of women.

The sooner we let people just be themselves, the better off we all are.

Why does there need to be only one way of being a guy? by @brandon.nappi

If you really care about spirituality, it's important to remember that the culture we live in is constantly pushing you to seek fulfillment outside of yourself and upward, more success, more status, more achievement.

But the sages across every tradition have always known something different.

The real journey is not out there.

It's not the obsessive movement up and out, that our culture perpetuates: it's down and in.

Deeper into your own soul, deeper into the present moment, deeper into your values, deeper into reflection, deeper into your shadow.

So you can stop climbing toward supremacy and start descending into compassion.

Of course, the spiritual path has to be more than interiority and inward looking.

If you ONLY look inward, you will miss your life.

The courageous journey inward is what prepares us to go outward in love and compassion toward every single person we meet.

This is the great paradox we seek to embody. by @brandon.nappi

I would rather be heartbroken and scorned by the cruel judgment of others than be cynical, jaded, and coldly detached from the world's anguish.

We are faced with a choice to feel, or to seal ourselves off for good.

I understand the temptation to go dark. To numb ourselves. Because witnessing the pain of the world, the weight of injustice, can some days feel like simply too much to bear.

And yet, what makes us human is our ability to feel.

We must keep feeling if we are to keep being human. This is our unique brilliance. The gift only we can give.

So please, keep feeling. Keep letting your heart be broken open.

This is the path of love.

Any other path is unthinkable. by @brandon.nappi

“The best thing we can do for each other is to listen with our ears and our hearts and to be assured that our questions are just as important as our answers.” -Mr. Rogers

All I’m ever trying to do is follow in the footsteps of Fred Rogers.

We can often underestimate the power of our presence.

Just listening is enough.

Asking questions is an act of love.

Today I’m choosing to show up with more presence and less fixing. by @brandon.nappi

I posted recently about seeing a young boy in a Hooters T-shirt and some of the reactions were absurd, but not surprising.

We live in a world where women are blamed for the harassment they receive, and the responses to my post proved exactly that.

I received everything from thoughtful conversation to outright hostility.

One troll in particular said something that I felt I needed to address.

So I recorded a voice note on my Substack, The Inner Voice of Love, breaking down the reactions and what they reveal about the way we think about women, boys, and accountability.

To receive my Substack comment LOVE and I’ll send you the link.

This is a tough conversation. But it is one we absolutely need to have. by @brandon.nappi

We talk about getting closer to God like God is somewhere far away and we just need to try a little harder to close the gap.

But that framing misses something really important that the mystics and sages of all traditions remind us.

Spirituality is not about getting closer to God.

Instead, it is about remembering that the distance was never real.

God is closer to you than you are to yourself.

There is no gap to close, no separation to overcome, no spiritual ladder to climb.

There is only the remembering and encountering what has been there all along waiting for you to wake up.

You have never been apart from your source.

Not even for a single moment. by @brandon.nappi
