How do we confront our faults?

Many people like to wallow in their faults, immersing themselves in false guilt. These people lament, saying, “I am a sinner. I am so bad. I cannot overcome my sins. How terrible that I have this fault!” And whenever they encounter faults within themselves, they throw themselves into the same unproductive current, thus increasing their guilty feelings.

These guilty feelings sadly have further consequences and a chain reaction is set in motion. This kind of preoccupation with one’s faults is obviously an impasse. It not only attracts negative forces, it is also based on self-deception. Often we believe ourselves to be very humble, while in reality we only want to take the easy way out by telling ourselves that everything is hopeless.

This attitude is frequent and it is just as much at a false extreme as its opposite: wanting to see oneself as already perfect. A person with spiritual understanding who tries to dissuade you from preoccupation with negativity means this kind of preoccupation is taking place. Read that again.

On the other hand, it is absolutely necessary on this spiritual path that we learn to know ourselves as we are and to accept our temporary realities. This does not mean that we should simply put our hands in our laps and not do anything about things either. We must say to ourselves, “This is how I am. I have this fault. I know it takes struggle, willpower and patience to eradicate it, but I can and I WILL do so.” THIS IS THE ONLY PRODUCTIVE PIVOT.

For when we look closely we will realize that the terrible upsets, the exaggerated guilty feelings about faults and shortcomings, are nothing but a form of pride and arrogance. We do want to be better than we actually are.

For many men, emotion isn’t absent. It may simply be easier to access in certain places.⁠

A stadium full of people can create permission for expressions that might feel uncomfortable elsewhere. Hugging, crying, shouting, celebrating, grieving a loss together. There is something interesting about how naturally emotion can move when the setting makes it feel safe.⁠

And perhaps that gives us another way into conversations about vulnerability. Instead of beginning with the emotions that feel hardest to name, we can notice the places where feeling is already happening and meet people there with curiosity, compassion, and gentleness.⁠

Long before we had therapists or self-help books, we had the sky, the fire, the water, and the ground beneath us.
