“残してきたもの” — The Things We Keep for @iongaf.xyz starring @shozoseo. A film about the things we hold onto, and the things that keep us returning. Ricky told me about the trip and a week later we were in Japan. The whole thing really started through Macy, who had bought an engine from Shozo a few years ago and kept that relationship alive. Somehow that connection turned into us landing in Tokyo, scouting Shozo’s house, and finding ourselves shooting the next morning. 4am start. One day. Barely a shot list, mostly just instinct. Every drift film I’d seen felt aggressive, violent, and handheld. I wanted this to feel like the exact opposite. 98% of the film lives on sticks. Locked off. Slow, poetic, composed. Letting the cars bring the violence while the camera stayed still. Shozo became the heart of that idea. He was kind, patient, and quiet. There was something so beautiful about how calm he was inside a world that felt so loud. Our incredible producers made everything happen through the language barrier, and somehow we ended up with Gwendal and Valentin, our DP and AC from Paris, who happened to be in Tokyo at the same time. Still surreal. Post was a puzzle. Zoe found the rhythm quickly and stitched it all together. Sam graced the grade, and Sam brought everything home with the sound. Films changed my life. It’s taken me places I never imagined going and brought people into my life I now call family. Maybe the most beautiful thing about it all is the people and places it leaves you with.. I’m so happy to finally celebrate this one. So much love for this film and so much gratitude for everyone who made it possible. I have so much more cooking in post right now. The prettiest images lensed by @gwendalperon and colored by @shmowells. I’ve always wanted to work with a French DP, and somehow Gwendal just happened to be in Japan at the exact same time as us. It couldn’t have worked out more perfectly. He was such a pleasure to make this with. So thoughtful, patient, and insanely talented. There was so much trust between us from the beginning, and he understood exactly when to protect an image and when to let a moment just happen. Couldn’t have asked for a better person behind the camera on this one <3 by @brandonjchen
