Custom “Alvin Johnson” AF1 aka the “Love Don’t Cost A Thing” AF1

I partially deconstructed the Air Force 1s, replacing the toe boxes, Swooshes, and heel tabs with authentic vintage Fendi canvas repurposed from a handbag.

Inspired by the iconic scene in Love Don’t Cost A Thing where Alvin, played by @nickcannon, wears his custom @fendi AF1s to the beach on senior ditch day.

“Where do you get your designer fabric??” 👀

I get asked this A LOT! One of my main methods is finding authentic designer pieces and deconstructing them to repurpose the fabric.

For my upcoming project, I needed a very specific Fendi pattern from the early 2000s which has been discontinued.

So I ended up finding a classic vintage Fendi bag on eBay, bought it specifically for the color/monogram, and carefully deconstructed it.

Follow for Part 2 where I’ll be cutting a pattern from this Fendi fabric. by @brandonmadeit

These are lowkey special to me because they were made for my first paid commission when I started making sneakers.

They were supposed to just be a simple red/black color blocking but because I was building my portfolio I added the Bape camo so my page wouldn’t look like basic boring customs lol by @brandonmadeit

So I did a thing…

I finally took a sneaker making course I’d been putting off for over a year. I was blessed with the opportunity to work alongside @brandon_at_cgs to create what I like to call the Air Jordan 1 “Genesis.”

I’ve been making customs for almost 4 years. I started with Angelus paint and brushes, then slowly got into fabrics, glues, sewing, and different materials.

Eventually, I knew I wanted to go beyond simply adding textiles to an existing shoe. I wanted to understand the shoe itself.

That led me to buying my Chinese leather shoe patcher and learning to sew. But I knew there was another level I hadn’t reached yet:

FULL BESPOKE.

I wanted to learn leather selection, pattern pieces, construction, backing materials, and what it actually takes to build a sneaker from the ground up.

That’s when I reached out to Brandon from @common_ground_studios . I’d been following his work and trusted his knowledge and expertise. He’s been making customs for years and was actually trained by Rey when he worked for The Shoe Surgeon. IYKYK.

Over 3 days, I learned everything from working with different leathers and extracting soles from donor pairs to operating a postbed sewing machine and stitching the uppers back to the sole.

I took a basic Air Jordan 1 Low from DTLR and turned it into something completely new..a sneaker built by hand, from the ground up. A little handmade heat, if you will.

And as much as I’d love to take all the credit, these were a true collaboration. Brandon and I both faced challenges throughout the process, and even the flaws are part of the story.

The goal wasn’t perfection. It was to learn, practice, and rediscover the feeling I had when I first picked up those Angelus paints.

That feeling of creative expression. Of making something with my own hands. Of realizing:

“I don’t want my dreams to die before I give them a chance to live.”

This is only the beginning. Hence the name “Genesis.”

✊🏾 I know my people, so consider this your fair warning BEFORE Halloween even gets here: Christmas orders are officially on the radar. 🎁

If you’re planning to gift something handcrafted, customized, or made specifically for someone, don’t wait until December to start thinking about it.

And please don’t be in my DMs two weeks after Cyber Monday asking if I can have it ready by Christmas. 😂

The tree you leave up until April will still be looking just as empty on Jesus’ birthday if you procrastinate. 🎄

Holiday season gets busy fast, so get your orders in early and give the work the time it deserves.

🎅🏾 Christmas is coming.
