The Downtown Dig is entering its final stages, but completion has been slightly delayed due to a parts supply issue.

While crews were aiming to fully open the road during the week of October 19, a delay in installing traffic signals at the William Street intersection has pushed the timeline back. County staff remain optimistic for a late October, or very early November, full reopening.

⭐ To keep the project moving as fast as possible, the contractor plans to work this Saturday, October 17, between the hours of 7:00 am and 5:00 pm (weather permitting).

Here is the revised, phased plan to get the road fully reopened:

📆 Phase 1: William Street Intersection Reopens
(Targeted for the end of next week)

✔ Crews expect to finish and inspect the traffic signals.
✔ Once approved, the William Street intersection and Grand River Street North (heading north) will fully reopen.
✔ Paving and line painting for this section are already complete.

📆 Phase 2: Full Reopening
(Immediately following Phase 1)

✔ Grand River Street North (between William St and the Nith River Bridge) will close for four days.
✔ This closure is required to pave the final layer of asphalt, install two raised crosswalks, and paint the Veteran’s crosswalk at Mechanic Street.
✔ We will share the detour route utilizing Willow St and William St as we approach this work.

Note: This 4-day phase is highly weather-dependent and will determine the exact final opening date.

🚧 Completed Milestones (100% Done)
• All watermain and sanitary sewer installations
• Siphon work, lining, and road granular
• Topsoil placement, curbs, and sidewalks
• Base asphalt, streetlights, and hydro repairs

🚧 Work Remaining
• 95% Complete: Brickwork
• Traffic signal installation and testing
• Siphon chamber lid installation, backfilling, and area restoration
• Restoration of the east side of the William Street bridge
• Planting trees and greenery
• Surface asphalt paving (Mechanic Street to the Nith River Bridge)
• Installing the Veterans Crosswalk by Mechanic Street
• Power washing sidewalks and building faces

Construction continues to progress on Station 9 (North Paris) Fire Station, on Ann Wilson Way in Paris 🔥

The pre-engineered steel frame has now been delivered to the site, and crews are continuing to assemble the structure. Primary and secondary steel installation is approximately 50 per cent complete, giving the community a first look at the size and scale of the new station.

“We’re pleased to see the new Station 9 continuing to take shape,” said @countyofbrantfd Fire Chief Darren Watson. “This is an exciting milestone for our firefighters and the residents in the north end of the County. This new facility will provide our firefighters with the space, resources and support they need to respond to emergencies and serve the community.”

Another exciting milestone was reached this month with the completion of the watermain connection. The watermain successfully passed required testing and the final connection was completed.

Over the coming months, crews will continue work on the steel structure, landscaping and other key building components.

📆 The project remains on schedule for anticipated completion in Spring 2027.

The new North Paris Fire Station is part of the County of Brant’s Fire Master Plan (2021) and reflects the County’s ongoing investment in fire services and emergency response infrastructure to support firefighters and the community for years to come.

Emergency Repair: Saving the Crops!🌽

Underground infrastructure is invisible until something goes wrong! Earlier this year, the County crew rushed out to handle an emergency tile drain repair that was causing a major headache for a local farm.

❌️ The Problem: A massive, dense root had completely clogged the underground tile drain. Because the water had nowhere to go, it caused severe upstream flooding, drowning approximately 3 acres of a productive agricultural field.

💧The Quick Fix: Our crews located the blockage, dug down, removed the stubborn root mass, and repaired the broken tile. The results were almost instant: once the system was cleared, it took just 1.5 days to fully drain the entire 3-acre flooded area.

✔️ Field Restored: Even with heavy, non-stop rain, this field is now completely dry and has been successfully restored to full crop production.

We are here to support our hardworking farmers and keep our agricultural lands operating exactly as designed!

Wondering how the roots of our new downtown trees will grow?🌳

Last summer, Silva Cells were installed beneath sidewalks and planter boxes in @dtparisontario to give our new trees a healthy start!

🌱 What are Silva Cells?
These underground structures support the weight of sidewalks while creating space for healthy soil, giving tree roots room to spread and grow beneath the pavement.

💧 Stormwater Benefits:
Silva Cells allow rainwater to soak into the soil, helping reduce runoff and filter some pollutants through the soil and roots.

🌳 Why does this matter?
By providing more room for roots to grow, Silva Cells help our new trees establish themselves and grow healthier over time, all while supporting the sidewalks above.

As these trees mature, they’ll provide shade and help create cooler, greener and more welcoming streets for everyone to enjoy!

This is another way the County of Brant is working toward its Climate Action Plan goal of planting 55,000 trees by 2035 and building a healthier, more sustainable community.

What does “archaeological potential” mean? ⛏️

It doesn’t necessarily mean that an archaeological site has already been found.

“Archaeological potential” means there may be archaeological sites or artifacts in an area. We can look at the land, its location and what we already know about the area to help determine where archaeological resources may be found.

As part of the Archaeological Management Plan, updated mapping will help identify areas of archaeological potential in the County and guide when further investigation may be needed.
