Students learn how to engage in courageous conversations by watching how the adults around them show up.
ㅤ
If educators want students to practice vulnerability, courage, listening, and thoughtful discourse, those ways of being have to be modeled first. That is why transformation begins with the self. Educators embody the skills, bring them into their teaching, and create the conditions for students to experience them in action.
ㅤ
When leaders hold space with courage and intention, that transformation can move from the educator, to the classroom, to the learning experience itself.
ㅤ
Courageous discourse starts with us.

Trying to do everything can make it harder to recognize what you are uniquely meant to do.
ㅤ
In this clip, Ilana reflects on learning to let go of marketing, sales, product, organizing, and leading every part of the work herself. The shift came when she began focusing on her own superpowers and creating space for other people to bring theirs.
ㅤ
When people are able to contribute from their strongest gifts, collaboration becomes more powerful. For Ilana, that meant recognizing her ability to design and lead transformative experiences, teach, and create work that has now reached tens of thousands of educators.
ㅤ
Leadership is not about being everything to everyone. Sometimes the real superpower is knowing what is yours to do and trusting others to bring what is uniquely theirs.

Emotional regulation shows up in small recognizable actions that you do when you're overwhelmed.
ㅤ
Emotional regulation is not never feeling big emotions. That's not realistic. Just as we teach our students, it's what we do with our big emotions after that matters.
ㅤ
And that is what we love about emotional regulation. It doesn't ask us to be perfect but it does give us the tools to show up a little differently. by @breathe4change

Hard conversations do not only require the right words. They require the right way of being.
ㅤ
Before students enter a difficult conversation, they can pause and ask themselves: How do I want to show up right now? Open. Curious. Empathetic. Kind. Present. A good listener.
ㅤ
That simple intention can change the energy of the entire conversation. When students name how they want to be, they begin holding themselves accountable for the presence they bring into the room.
ㅤ
Courageous discourse starts before anyone speaks. It starts with the shared intention to learn, listen, and grow together.

We ask teachers to manage 20 to 30 different personalities, emotions, needs, and behaviors in one room, often without ever teaching them how.
ㅤ
And for a long time, classroom management was treated as a matter of control. You set the rules, enforce the consequences, and keep everyone in line.
ㅤ
But understanding behavior requires more than knowing how to respond to it.
It requires understanding what drives it.
ㅤ
A student struggling to regulate their emotions isn't always a student choosing to be disruptive. And a teacher struggling to manage their classroom isn't necessarily a teacher who lacks authority.
ㅤ
Sometimes, what's missing is the training to recognize what's happening beneath the behavior.
ㅤ
At Breathe For Change, we believe supporting students starts with supporting the educators responsible for them.
ㅤ
Because teachers deserve more than the expectation to manage a classroom. They deserve the tools to create one where everyone can thrive.

Before students can learn, they need to feel safe enough to try. 💜
ㅤ
Meet Kristy Herrera, a kindergarten teacher with over 24 years of classroom experience, a Breathe for Change graduate, and a passionate advocate for putting human connection at the center of education.
ㅤ
After discovering Breathe for Change in 2018, Kristy began incorporating social-emotional learning into her daily classroom routines. Morning circles, emotional check-ins, and simple acts of kindness became opportunities for her students to feel seen, heard, and supported.
ㅤ
But she wanted to understand something more deeply: What happens to academic learning when we prioritize emotional safety?
ㅤ
Through her graduate research, Kristy studied the relationship between daily morning circles, language development, and academic progress among her kindergarten students.
ㅤ
By the end of the school year, 99% of her students had demonstrated academic improvement.
ㅤ
Her experience speaks to something we believe deeply at Breathe for Change: The future of education isn't just about what we teach. It's about how we help students feel, connect, and grow in the process.
ㅤ
When we nurture the human behind the learner, we create more opportunities for learning to happen.
ㅤ
And when we empower educators like Kristy with the tools to lead that change, the impact can extend far beyond a single classroom. 💜 Smiling woman near a microphone with quote on safe, secure, and loved students. by @breathe4change

When educators avoid political topics altogether, the cost is not only personal for students. The cost is also collective.
ㅤ
Civics classrooms give students a place to practice the skills democracy requires: listening across difference, engaging with evidence, reasoning through complex ideas, and learning how to speak with one another in a civil way.
ㅤ
If students do not get to practice these conversations in safe classroom spaces with adults who can guide them, they will still have them somewhere else. Often, that means TikTok, Instagram, cable news, Congress, or the wider internet. Students need spaces where courageous discourse can be practiced with care, context, and support.

Shame's favorite trick is convincing you you're the only one.
ㅤ
The only educator this tired. This stretched. This far from the reason you started.
ㅤ
It then convinces you to shut down and go quiet.
ㅤ
Quiet is where it grows.
ㅤ
The way through isn't pushing harder on your own. It's with people who understand what you are experiencing. This is why Breathe for Change exists. by @breathe4change

Grounding becomes more powerful when students can actually feel it in their bodies.
ㅤ
In this clip, Beth shares a simple practice that helps students plant their feet, connect with the ground beneath them, and bring their attention back to the present moment.
ㅤ
When students are overactivated, coming in from recess, or moving through big energy, grounding can help bring them back into their window of tolerance. It gives them a sensory experience of being steady, supported, and ready to learn.
