✨ Lost Clumps ✨
.
I'm still practicing different ways to style my short curls. Some days I like it, some days I miss my longer hair. But when I have awkward hair days I have to remember- hair cuts give me some lost clumps. And this is TOTALLY normal. Curls live in little clump families and after a cut, some families get broken up and a bit lost for a time. Swipe to see the lost pieces pointed out.

After a cut I do my go to- ACV rinse and @sheamoisture protein mask. This helps my shocked curls re-clump tons faster. What do you do after a haircut to help get past the curl shock??

Overall, still adjusting to my #hobbithair (Swipe twice for that lovely comparison of you missed it from my stories 😂) but there shorter wash, style, and dry time can 👏 not 👏 be 👏beat!

I finally got a haircut on Friday! It was looking pretty strange after the cut so I decided to do an ACV rinse and a protein mask and I gotta say! I was pretty pleased with my first go at styling my short curls!!
.
.
I've been binge watching styling videos from my favorite short fringe curlies (@curlyterp @honestlizhere and @cute_curly_coffee - I'm looking at you!) for guidance. I'm excited to keep playing around with it and see what works best for me. I feel like I lost 20lbs for how light my hair is 😍 and I'm not mad about how much faster it dries now!

Here's a #tbt for ya. Left side was my first day going curly (coming up on a year in a few weeks 🤯) and right side was from a wash day several weeks backs.
.
.
Obviously when I look at these, I can see a huge change in my hair health- I'm so proud and grateful for that. But what you might not be able to see when you look at these pictures is that I was really happy and excited about both of these wash days. I sent that left side picture to my best friend feeling so proud and excited to show off my texture! (Thanks @staceehun for cheering me on since day 1 😘) And I rocked that Washday all over town. (sigh, remember when going places was a thing? 😂)

There's a lot of joy to be had in celebrating where you're at TODAY. You don't need to be anywhere else in your journey then where you are right now. Don't wait to get to some desired goal to be happy. Curl love shouldn't be conditional- I dare you to love your curls without regard to how your Washday went! ❤️❤️ by @breestobbe

There's something so satisfying about the details of textured hair; each head is like a snowflake. It only makes sense that there would be million different ways to take care of your textured hair that is so truly unique to you. Don't be afraid to do what makes you happy-even if it's breaking someone else's rules!

I saw a friend's post on Facebook a few weeks back about the phrase "high maintenance" when it comes to people- specifically women. And it's had me thinking. I've decided to do away with that phrase in my life. It feels like a very effective way to make a woman feel like a burden or feel guilty for taking care of her wants and needs. 🤷‍♀️

I've been trying this Shampoo-conditioner duo out for a few of weeks now and they have earned a permanent spot on my shower shelf. I live in an area with HARD water... like... so hard it breaks stuff. Which means that I've got to stay on top of that pesky mineral build up. This shampoo gets it DONE! ✨5 months gone ✨

Yesterday marked 5 months since my Elsie bug left us. I'm getting better at asking for love and support- especially with husband who makes it easy to be vulnerable. I'm getting more comfortable crying and grieving whenever I feel it hit- without regards to who I'm with or where I'm at. I'm getting better at laughing instead of only sobbing when I remember her dance moves and giggles.

.
I've not yet learned how to let go of some of the regrets- Why didn't I cheer you on from the roof tops when you were walking up to random teens in line at the amusement park and dropping into the splits? Why was I embarrassed when you ran up to random strangers and hugged them or asked them to marry you? I wanted to protect you but I should've sent more time celebrating you.
.
.
Life hasn't fully gained it's color back, maybe it won't ever really have the same hue. But I do find a lot of joy trying to be like her. Trying to make these lessons count.

.

95% of having textured hair and being happy about it is simply choosing to be happy about it. Sure, my clumps aren't as big and bouncy as they have been in the past. Sure, there's some halo frizz peeking around. Whatevs. None of this really matters.

2019 me would have been upset by this washday- 2020 me is celebrating the fact that my hair is healthy and that nothing else matters when it comes to a Washday.

✨ How to NOT give up ✨

Sometimes my comments and DMs are from your lovelies who just feel like giving up on natural hair. And let me first say- I feel you. Totally totally get it. So here's what I do to keep myself going when I get in a hair slump. 👇
.
➰ Look back at progress and past successes. This pic is an oldie from a fav Washday several weeks back and it helps me remember that it's not always going to be a slump.
.
➰ Durning transition, look up your fav Instagramer's transformation pics to give you something to look forward to.
.
➰ Give your hair a rest. Give yourself permission to not care how your hair looks for a week or two. Rock the bun, the hat, the braids- whatevs. If you're burnt out, let yourself recharge.
.
➰ When you're ready, give some TLC to those curls. Even if you don't love the final result, caring for your hair helps you love what you've got. Celebrate the stage you're at and acknowledge that it's a journey, not a destination.
.
➰ Above all remember- on the other side of discouragement is progress. Not just with your natural hair, but with all things in life. Discouragement comes before the breakthrough. So keep holding on for that moment.
.
.
There is no 1 thing that you can do to make transitioning or getting through a slump easier, rather it's a mental shift. Give yourself grace, time, and joy in being unique. You only get to be in this moment once, so let's celebrate the crap out of it!

✨ Listening to your hair ✨

My hair has been telling me that I need a haircut for many months now. Here's how I know:
➰ I have more blah hair days than good ones.
➰ My regular styling methods don't give me my normal results
➰ It's very difficult to get and maintain volume. Especially at the roots.
➰ I have to wash my hair more often
➰ Triangle shape!!
➰ My ends wonk out rather than hold the pattern of the rest of the clump.
➰ Excess frizz
