Second painting from Vernon last week. After leaving the highway where I painted the previous work, I walked around for some lunch then headed for another painting spot. I found this scene poking between a large ford dealership and a service station. Parked myself in the parking lot under a tree and had an enjoyable post lunch paint.

Available, DM for information

I painted this sitting beside a highway that skirts around the city of Vernon. Perched between the road and a slow moving creek, I leant against a street light to paint this one. I knew I wanted to get on that awkward side of the road, but was worried what I would look like sitting in such a weird spot.

My focus on the painting slowly faded out the traffic and the experience became very pleasant. I’m glad I fought the doubt and made the extra effort to get over the highway and achieve what I wanted to achieve.

Available, DM for details 🙂

Really enjoying the early fall weather. Clear blue skies with these colours makes for amazing days. Don’t need much more as a painter.

I’ve been getting out lately and making the most of the sun before it disappears into winter. It’s been peaceful and nice to paint watercolours, purely for the love of it.

Working with them in a representational way, rather than an abstract way has been a great challenge. One that is proving to be meaningful as I fall more in love with the medium.

Deinstall time. Weird taking down all the work we have invested so much time in over the last few months/years. Not the end however, as we prepare for gallery shows, residencies and travel that supports the growth of our practices. @emilycarrmfa 2026 is moving along nicely.

Last day to see the thesis exhibition at Emily Carr today. Thanks to everyone that came to the opening last week. It was a great turnout and a great evening.

My thesis supervisor @multispecies.studio is in the second image. Her gentle guidance over the last two years helped bring this journey of art, therapy and land into being. Thanks Julie.

Thanks to @lindsaybouvier for the images 🙂

Proud of the work and proud to share it with everyone.
Thanks for everyone that has come so far and to anyone squeezing in before it comes down.

After two years of dedicated research and making the MFA 2026 cohort has their thesis exhibition hung and on display at @emilycarru .

A transformative experience for both myself and the work I have worked closely with the Columbia River as a teacher and a healer. Building a relationship with the River evolved my practice from one of looking at the land as a seperate object through plein air painting, to one that intimately experiences the land through direct experience and sound

Show opening is tonight July 9th at 6pm and open till the 16th July. Come down and say hi taken in Emily Carr University of Art + Design by @brettmallon

A little clip making some homemade watercolours from natural pigments. During my masters program I experimented with a variety of handmade pigments found around my home, birch bark, charcoal, gifted coral, leaves and soft stone, however, colour became more and more important to the thesis project that is currently on display for the @emilycarrmfa thesis exhibit.

This led me to purchase natural pigment from @maiwa_naturaldyes helping to continue handmade pigments while enhancing the colour vibrancy. The pigments added a texture, grain and grittiness that interacted with synthetic watercolours in interesting ways.

Opening event tomorrow, 9th July from 6pm at @emilycarru come get up close and check out some interesting details in the large watercolour work I have on display.

Meet the Artist: Brett Mallon (@brettmallon)

In the lead-up to our MFA 2026 Thesis Exhibition, These Light-Filled Bodies, we are excited to share a look at the thesis projects of the graduating artists and the work developed over the past two years.

‘Healing River’ questions how intimate relationships with the land nurture personal health in body and mind. My experimental and fluid practice meanders with the
Columbia River, exploring River water, natural pigments, watercolour, sound and direct experience to co-create a complex, layered and compassionate history to place.
