Actually my first attempt at directing a documentary was a short documentary film I made called MEET MICKEY ROURKE. A film I wanted to make but never finished that was inspired by the Maysles Bros. film MEET MARLON BRANDO. During my early childhood Mickey who went to my Alma Mater, Miami Beach Sr. High School with my Mom and Uncle George and occasionally lived in my garage in Miami Beach was very close to my family. When he decided to pause his acting career and become a boxer my dream was to be a filmmaker…. knowing this he gave me the opportunity to shadow him with a camera. I’m very grateful to Mickey for his support and belief in me and for giving a young film student like myself the opportunity to practice my craft and learn from him. This meant the world to me and gave me the confidence I needed to one day work with actors. Years after I shot the footage, my friend, the legendary documentary Filmmaker Albert Maysles, who was in his mid 80’s, was visiting me in LA and I showed him my raw Mickey Rourke footage! He said it reminded him of his film on Brando. I was so happy since his film on Brando was one my favorite docs and biggest inspiration for my unfinished film. Albert was the filmmaker behind Grey Gardens (1975), Gimme Shelter (1970), and Salesman (1969), many made with his younger brother David Maysles. While looking at the footage he said Mickey was the same incredibly charming, brilliant actor and enigmatic character that Brando was and that he wanted to be a part of it somehow and asked if he could edit the footage and help complete the film… To me it was the equivalent of a painter being asked by Picasso to paint over a canvas that was already started. This became a dream for me…..collaborating with the great Albert Maysles with footage that I had filmed in my youth! Albert’s appreciation of my work gave me so much validation and encouragement. Maysles Films, Inc. Presents…. WOW! So very proud of this one. Love you @mickey_rourke_ and Albert Maysles #RIP @mayslesdocumentarycenter by @brettrat
