This was the weekend after Rush Hour came out and it was the biggest opening in the history of the studio @newlinecinema Mike De Luca the Chairman of the studio at that time very generously had a enormous check delivered to me on opening weekend. Biggest check I ever received in my life which was also way in advance of when I was supposed to receive it. In retrospect I wish he would have doled it out. Big mistake I was only a kid….. so I immediately called my friend Quentin Tarantino and excitedly said “I got the biggest check of my life and I have never been on a jet so I am renting one let’s go to Vegas and I will bring a briefcase full of cash so we can gamble, bring who you want” I had 24 hours to think about my choices and thankfully realized what a ridiculously bad idea it was” I ended up inviting @christucker and Quentin brought his girlfriend at the time Mira Sorvino and her father the late great Paul Sorvino who I worked with in my first film Money Talks. Thank G_d I ultimately chickened out and didn’t bring any cash with me but we had the best time regardless! Even though my grandparents told me to save the money and put it in the bank and don’t look at it ever again….I couldn’t control myself and I was itching to spend it I ended up using the money to purchase a sculpture I fell in love with by Alberto Giacometti, the Swiss sculpture and painter, that I found while thumbing though a @christiesinc catalogue. Because I never bought a piece of art from an auction before I ignorantly thought the price I bid on the sculpture was the final price and didn’t realize there was a 20 percent premium on top of the cost. My grandparents were shocked when I asked to borrow money from them (the amount was a big portion of their retirement but they gave it to me anyway) just to pay the commission. All this after they told me to save my money and put it away instead I spent it all on one purchase. They must of thought I was insane! It was the first piece of art I ever bought and I didn’t even know who Giacometti was when I bought it. Moral to the story, always listen to your Grandparents (unless you have an instinct on a piece of art you just have to own) 😜

Happy 105th birthday to the greatest photographer ever @helmutnewtonfoundation Who took the best photo of me on the set of my film RED DRAGON with my producer DINO DELAURENTIIS! Dino produced more than 500 films including Federico Fellini’s La Strada (1954) and Nights of Cabiria (1957)—both Oscar winners for Best Foreign Language Film. What an honor it was to make a film with him as my producer at such a young age. Miss you Dino and Helmut!

I had been going to the island of St Bart’s for many years and would always celebrate my friend Ronald Perelman’s bday on New Years. I asked Ronald who was going to be there for his bday that particular year and he mentioned that @francisfordcoppola was coming with his daughter @sofiacoppola Knowing that my mentor Robert Evans was estranged from Francis since The Cotton Club in 1983 which Bob produced and Francis directed…… I decided to try to reunite them by bringing Bob as my guest to St. Bart’s. We arrived on Ron Perelmans boat the evening of Dec 31 and unbeknownst to Francis and Bob that they would see each other they were so overwhelmingly surprised. To Francis’ credit he immediately gave Bob the biggest and warmest embrace. I was moved by this classy gesture and so happy to have coordinated this great reunion between these two old friends with such great history. This moment was so meaningful for Bob and he couldn’t have been happier connecting with Francis after all the years that had passed. Bob was one the most prolific and talented producers in the history of Hollywood and inspired many generations of filmmakers with the great films he produced. Sadly there was no tribute for him in Hollywood after his passing. Francis aware of this and being the mensch that he is spoke so lovingly about Bob at the Oscars which was the only public mention of Robert Evans since his passing. I had tried everything to get @theacademy to consider Bob for the Irving Thalberg Honorary Oscar before his passing which was a dream of his and no one on the board would vote for his nomination in spite of the fact that I had Jack Nicholson and Dustin Hoffman write letters personally to speak of his talent and their experiences working together. Shame on them for not giving Bob the accolades he deserved. So grateful to have had his friendship and mentorship early on in my career.

I will never forget when @kedarmassenburg manager for @thedangelo asked me to direct his first music video ever. Kedar played me the record for Brown Sugar and I was blown away because at that time I had never heard anything like it from a modern artist. Jodeci was at the top of their game and R&B was sounding different. The closest thing to what D’Angelo sounded like was from generations ago, Al Green’s “Love and Happiness” or Marvin Gaye “What’s Goin On” So I played his album for Andre and Russell to get their opinion and both said D’Angelo couldn’t possibly be a REAL artist that it was “too good to be true” that it must be a producer manufacturing of an artist. Damn were they wrong! I told them I was going to do the video anyway and they both gave me same advice. Spend time with D’Angelo before you make the video and thats what I did. What I learned was fascinating and I felt like I was in the presence of not only the most authentic artist I had ever met but a true virtuoso musician and superstar. From his falsetto voice, to his genius talent on the piano, to what he was signing about was so inspiring and real. D’Angelo was as soulful as they come and I felt I really understood what he was about. We spent months together talking about what his music meant to him and its meaning. The song spoke to me and gave me several ideas for his debut video. I loved D and wanted to do right by him and show audiences who he really was as an artist and human being. Brown Sugar was a tribute to the women of color who he loved and respected and of course an inspiration to his all time favorite, Weed aka Herb. So with the double meaning I knew what I needed to do for the video….. D’Angelo performing in a smoke filled room with women of color but with a very specific characteristic, yes all the women had to have OUTIE Belly Buttons 😜. Peep the video! D’Angelo playing his Wurlitzer Keyboard (which I now proudly own), and focused on D’s Lips and his hands moving across the keys like Mozart. My first truly cinematic music video was born. My proudest moment as a music video director! My career exploded with Brown Sugar and we went on to collaborate on 2 more videos. 🙏
