I didn’t set out to photograph the dogs. Like most things in the Redland, they found me first — one crossing a flooded road at dawn, stopping to drink from its own reflection.

Out here on the farm roads of southwest Miami-Dade, on the edge of the Everglades, abandonment is hardly new. No streetlights, no cell service. People leave what they no longer want where no one’s watching. Some dogs get left when a family moves on. Others are dropped at the roadside like the furniture beside them. It’s unrelenting. Some find homes with the people who live here, some don’t.

I came to document this strange world. The dogs were already here. I’ll continue to photograph them when they let me.

I had no interest in color work until 2013. Swore I wouldn’t shoot color. Turns out, I lied.

Fun fact. When I made this photo it was the last exposure on that roll. I was just taking anything so I could go home and develop. I didn’t notice the head over me, and the claw wrapped around my shoulder at all.
I was also actively fighting my addiction to painkillers at the time. My demon hanging over me? Who knows?🤷🏼

Submitting my SRO work to several publications. So many photographs that didn’t make the cut. Yet they’re all permanently stuck in my memory. Funny going through a half a lifetime of work it is.

Not the recital. Not the held line for the judges. The floor afterward — the ache in her knee she’s working with both hands, still in her hoodie, already spent.

My daughter dances. I’ve started shooting what it actually costs her: the injuries, the exhaustion, the long unglamorous hours between the moments everyone claps for.

She doesn’t perform for the camera. She’s grown up with a father who points one at everything, and somewhere along the way it stopped being a thing that happens to her. She just lets me stay in the room.

Part documentary project, part excuse — she’s at the age where she’s pulling away, the way she’s supposed to, and this gives me a reason to be there as long as she lets me.

More soon.

Not every photo is going to work. Most will be failures.

Dogs of the Redland.
Some of my photographs are hard to look at. But it’s the truth.

The most pragmatic, even “ugly” things we build — signs, lots, wires, storefronts — keep producing a poetry nobody designed. Function and place fall into step on their own. Beauty not in spite of utility, but because of it.

I didn’t know that’s what this was when I started. I just kept photographing these places. The meaning showed up in the edit — the pictures told me what I’d been looking at before I could’ve said it out loud.
