#AlohaFriday Before the heat sets in and the beach fills up, Waikīkī offers a rare moment of pure serenity. Looking out past the lining palm trees, clean lines of new south swell roll across the reef with only a few early risers scattered in the lineup. There is nothing quite like catching South Shore at first light. Quiet, glassy, and completely wide open before the rest of the world wakes up.

Photo 2 Rainbow before the storm I swam out on a stormy cloudy day made it out to the break after getting sucked inside on the rip, than couldn’t get water off my port to shoot photos I was very frustrated to say the least Maybe everything happened because I had just eaten a mushroom gummies ? The surf world lost another legend. RIP HANK FOTO.
His real name was Brian Stephen and for four decades, “Hank” stood at the center of surf culture ultimately as a gonzo photographer, multifaceted and one of a kind all in one. He was shaping careers and capturing some of the world’s best surfers and moments.
Much aloha goes out to his son, Fender, and all who knew him. And if you did know him, you realize why I picked some rock ‘n’ roll music instead of something more somber. All respect.

I just got the news. Hank has passed away .He’s on the ultimate surf adventure. It was just his time but the world is gonna be a very different place for many of us without Hank. I sent him a text this morning. I Said Hank I’m checking up on you cause I haven’t been to see him in the hospital for four or five days and he wrote me back and he said, I’m Out, I thought they were letting him out of the hospital again and I couldn’t believe it I said where are you and I got no response two hours later I heard the news. I realized Hank was calling to tell me he was ready to go. I just didn’t realize what he was saying, but he went out on his own terms and now I’m gonna sit here and cry like I did with my dog and my dad and Glen Hansard and now Hank all just recently. I’m happy for Hank. He was hurting. His body was beat to hell. I say a prayer for his son fender and I’m sorry for his loss. there areso many Hank stories out there. We should write a book and just everybody tell their Hank stories Hank, you were an asshole, but you were our asshole. Love you long timeHank and we will see you on the other side. @freesurfemagazine by @brianbielmann

Well, I thought I’d give the Local Surf community of Honolulu a little love again by posting a whole bunch of people who I really don’t know who they are but thanks to you guys pointing them out. I’ve been able to ID them. The first guy with his dog, not sure of his name but he’s from surfpics.com who also shoots photos I guess anyway I had so much fun shooting these and after shooting town with non-death-defying waves I don’t wanna go back to shooting the North Shore anymore. I wanna shoot town until I’m 80 years old.. and that’s probably the only place in the world you can do that where the waves are actually good that is. @freesurfmag by @brianbielmann
