Ten years ago, @tincanbros wrote and produced the first production of our spy homage musical #spiesareforever. On a personal level, it was my (Brian’s) biggest project to date as a lead producer and my first real crash course in scaling up.
 We crowdfunded $60K, a massive leap compared to the (almost) zero budget we’d been working with up until that point. It was an incredible experience, but I quickly learned that more money didn’t necessarily make things easier. It meant more people, more moving parts, and way more responsibility.
 One of the many lessons I learned on that show: $60K to cover Kickstarter rewards for 1,100 backers, a cast of eight, a four-piece band, a full design team, dozens of costumes, and a four-week theater rental is basically no money at all. But $60K for a two-person play in a black box? Now that’s downright comfortable. The size of your budget matters, but the scale of your ambition matters just as much!
 If you’re thinking about mounting a show yourself, maybe $60K feels a few steps ahead of where you’re at. Totally fair. But if you’re willing to roll up your sleeves, #makethedamnshow works at (almost) any level, whether your friends are working for peanuts or you’re building out a legit backend for collaborators.
 And even if you end up skipping a few steps along the way, because, say, your one-person Twelve Angry Men isn’t going to need Equity contracts, it’s better to know what you’re skipping rather than not know those steps exist.
 I’ve already made all these mistakes so you don’t have to. I promise you’ll find brand new mistakes to make, mistakes I never could’ve dreamed of!

Ah instagram, a writers medium! Turns out putting some of the Western canon’s most famous authors around one dinner table is a great way to make a show and a terrible way to make it through dinner alive.
 A huge thank you to our tremendous cast and crew, who worked incredibly hard to mount this adaptation in no time at all, and to the wildly enthusiastic audiences who came out to solve a murder with us. We couldn’t have asked for a better way to bring Poe Party back to life, and as a fan of the original series (and, ahem, Ralph Waldo Emerson), I was honored to be asked along for the ride.
