I’m a little late to the posting party but recently I did that thing where you co-write and co-star in a full length original musical and also you have to learn how to sing because you’ve never done that in front of an audience before. 🫠

Edgar Allan Poe’s Murder Mystery Dinner Party: The Musical was a whimsical delight and I am incredibly proud of the coterie of co-conspirators and lunatics who helped bring this thing to life.

What a treat combing back through this show with @sineadpersuade, righting wrongs, deepening themes and characters, and getting to see how we’ve grown as writers in 10 years. @glatthorn is an actual genius, every song he wrote is a bop. No skips, all earworms. Sinead and I are so lucky we got to work with him creating this show. @wjstrobelight as usual was the perfect person to wrangle our sometimes unwieldy ambitions into something elevated and cohesive. Thanks to him it always seems like we have waaaay more money than we actually do. And I can’t say enough good things about @brianro__ who produced the hell out of this show with an inspirational sense of calm and humor.

And of course @mkwiles who is just the best at everything really. Without her, this would all still be a dream within a dream.

“Never Meet Your Heroes” by Brett EvansMaFrog - I met the ones who made me laugh
when laughter felt like prayer

And we are only theatre kids
with different lines to say
entering from different wings
of the same old human play

One waits beneath the spotlight
one is hidden in the crowd
one learns to make a stranger laugh
one learns to laugh out loud

But every heart is waiting
for the same familiar cue
I made this little thing because
I hoped it might find you

Perhaps that’s all that art has been
a hand across the aisle
a wounded person making jokes
to heal you for a while

And then the healed become the hands
that reach into the night
and someone who was saved by art
becomes somebody’s light

So who is fan and who is star?
Who follows? Who has led?
We’re children in a borrowed room
making worlds inside our heads

We paint the flats, we learn the songs
we miss a mark or two
we spend our little hour onstage
attempting something true

And maybe we won’t heal the world
Perhaps that claim’s too grand
But someone shaking in the dark
might find another hand

And maybe that is healing
not the trumpet, but the tune
not repairing all creation
just one corner of the room

I met my heroes and I learned
what heroes seldom say
They’re theatre kids,
and so am I
and we’re all in the same play - That goes for everyone I met yesterday. It doesn’t end with just the people on stage. The crew, the writers, the audience, all became new heroes to me. Thank you for your continued kindness. Everyday it helps me believe. #tincanbros #starkid #teamstarkid #theatrekids #theatrekid

Tin Can Bros. Reflection -
I’ve been thinking a lot about why Team StarKid and the Tin Can Bros have meant so much to me for so long.

And I think I finally found the language for it.

They’re human Muppets.

And I genuinely don’t know if I have a higher compliment.

Because the magic of the Muppets was never just that a frog could talk, or a bear could tell jokes, or that nobody really knows what the hell Gonzo is.
The magic was that nobody needed to know.

They built a world where being strange wasn’t something you had to explain before you were allowed inside.

And I think StarKid and the Tin Can Bros have spent years building that same kind of room.

A room for the weirdos. The theatre kids. The misfits. The people who learned every word to some ridiculous song because somewhere underneath the joke was a feeling they had never heard anybody else articulate.

Their work approaches humanity sideways. They make you laugh until your defenses disappear, and then suddenly there’s grief.

There’s loneliness.

There’s friendship and fear and identity and this enormous, aching human desire to be understood.

And you realize the ridiculous thing you’ve been laughing at has somehow been talking about you.

I think that’s why so many of us see ourselves in them. Because they never asked us to become less strange in order to belong. They made the strange part the invitation.

Their collective artistry has genuinely shaped pieces of the artist and person I became. And maybe that’s what I find so beautiful about all of this. They didn’t create worlds for weird people to escape into.
They created worlds strange enough to help us understand this one.

They showed us that there are other people who feel too much, laugh too loudly, care too deeply, make strange things, love strange things, and sometimes wonder if there is a room somewhere built for people like us.

Turns out there is.

Maybe we were never as alone as we thought.

Maybe we were just scattered around the world, waiting for some weird little musical to give us directions to each other.

And somehow, all of us Gonzo shaped humans found the same room. #tincanbros #starkid #teamstarkid #joeyri

(I mean, who has cable?)

But even then, it’s 3 PM. You should probably start thinking about dinner
